BET has set out to reintroduce the young, positive Black characters into mainstream TV with its new reality show, Baldwin Hills.

The introduction starts out by saying “Not all Black people live in the ghetto” and the show serves to prove this by documenting the day-to-day drama 11 young African-Americans.

The teens are living it up in Los Angeles’s privileged Baldwin Hills area, home to affluent Black lawyers, doctors, entertainers, and athletes.

From throwing exclusive pool parties to rockin’ expensive clothes, these kids fit right in with the new young, fly, and flashy generation – but is this representation really changing the image of young Black America?

Is this show more than just the Black version of MTV’s Laguna Beach? The show’s headline insists “Your dreams are their reality” – what do you think?

To me i cant relate to the show at all i’m a kid that lived in tha hood but not in poverty i moved from tha hood to the burbs but i wasnt like the other kids I’m one of tha kids that stucc out here that has to work for everything and so watchin kids that get stuff handed to them aint something that interest me it just makes me wonder y i got wut they so and y should i give them my attention for there 15 minutes of fame and i’m tryin to achieve my 15 years of fame

  • Well, personally, I pray this show does open the eyes of some stereotypical people who only think African-Americans are “ghetto”. I attend a mojority White school, so I’m use to people thinking Im stuck up or all that, but anyways, This show should help anyone see that we shouldnt hate on those kids on the show, but yet striive to be able to bless our kids in the future, yet at the same time learning the value of money and the importanace of status in life and that its not there for us to mishandle but to enhance.

  • alexandria says:

i definitely love this show, i cannot relate to living in the hood because i’ve lived in the suburbs around other african americans that are doing well all my life. but at the same time i dont think less of anyone because they are from the hood. i think the show shouldn’t have been in LA, instead it should have been in the suburbs of Atlanta where i live.

  • Christina says:

i am so sick and tired of BET copying MTV…i mean damn…be original…why in the hell would you want to watch a bunch of spoiled brats on TV rub in our faces how good they got it…they are not humble or even giving back to those less fortunate….i am just getting sick and tired of BET…african americans have always started trends…so BET…make it happen please and quit biting…its not a good look!!!!!!!

  • Fashinista says:

I can not relate to them neither. The characters are just not believable. Everyone is lame and cocky. I come from a middle-class family. But my parents are not into the flashy lifestyle so some would say my neighbor is sorta the hood because are house is not massive. But it is not the hood, Hood people just live there. I know I ain’t hood at times so I can’t relate to the Baldwin Hills Crew.

  • Shayla says:

Well personal i think it’s just like Laguna Beach, but worse. I mean there houses are not even big, and none of them have cars but there so rich?? I like sal tho because he comes from the hood and don’t forget where he come forms, Garnette can lick my clit, i love molly she reminds me of “myself” from her style to her personality…I came from the hood and now i stay in a big house thats way bigger then any of them and riding better too. but i don’t act anything like them, ” i sitll fvcks wit my ppl in H-town 3rd ward HC stand up lol”. BET could of did better i mean its alright but basically they are middle -class ppl to me, even hood people can rock ed hardy!!!

  • YoungS says:

I’ma make it regardless if my parents help or not i got a three year lil and a son the way but i can still balance all my responsiblities spoiled burb kids and just kids stucc out here is different i got no hand outs but i cant say if i get to that point of bein paid i can spoil my kids cause i already do in a sense but i aint gone let em be the ones who sterotype people in tha hood as all ghetto cause they not ghetto is just something people made up to divide us and scare others away thats y people arent so quicc to up and go to tha hood and help out cause tha sterotype is you gone get robbed i know for me i can ride down Desoto or North Main and not worry bout that cause i got love for my people in all hoods in tha H

  • Janaye says:

I dont belive my DREAMS is their reality, because I dont dream about material things. I dream about making and getting this money out here, and achieving my goals in life. Theirs getting handed to them I wish I could’ve had it like that lol. I didn’t catch the show, but I saw previews of it. Im with eveybody else it looks like an black Laguna Beach. I was raised in apartments I wouldnt call it to the hood, because it was in a nice area and the apartments were nice. Now me and my family live in a nice home its not a big ass mansion, but its something to be proud of(its something to be very proud of lol). And at the end of the day I think thats all that matters.

  • meme says:

i think that BET is lettin black people down.first off we know all black people “dont live in the ghetto”.but isnt that who BET is supposed to be target towards the black people living with a dollar and a dream.so to help us they show us what we dont have and then we’re supposed to aspire to be like the spoiled brats who party, shop, and gossip all day? now i know people are like “she’s biased cuz she’s from the ghetto”.but SUPRISE im lived in the burbs the first 6 years of my life and didnt have to worry about if my lights were gonna get cut off or worry bout being shot from going to the store.then my life changed.i moved to the worst neiborhood in chicago.people gotta understand money wont always be there for them to lean on.now the only good thing comin outta this is that they show us we can be doctors and lawyers.but do we really go to sell out to show we made it?all we gon have to show for our struggles is A MANSION YOUR DADDY BOUGHT!!!then you go out and buy some rocawear so you can seem more black?gotta have some street cred right? can seem TOO RICH or some poor kid might beat your ass.MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL REMEMBER THAT YALL.we pursue it at any means and thats why there is a ghetto and thats why people sell drugs for that mighty dollar.we’d kill each other for $200 to buy some useless shit.this dont make no sense at all.i aint watchin that shit…

  • Taylor says:

Well I do not like the show. I saw half of the show and turned the tv. First of all BET got the idea from the show The Hills on MTV. Also I did not know the introduction started off saying “Not all black people are living in the ghetto.” WELL DUH BET I MEAN REALLY WE KNOW THAT. And its crazy because they say that but BET is still protraying black people as we are ghetto, ignorant, and other disgusting things! I cant relate to these kids! Im not rich and spoiled. But im not poor. I guess you can say im well off. I mean me and my family have good days and bad days but we work it out at the end of the day! Im pretty sure most black kids probably dont relate to this either. Not trying to bring us down. But really if they were going to make a show for kids or teens to relate to why not a show with normal kids just AVERAGE KIDS! From what I saw most of the people of the show are not grateful, the houses is not big, and the neighborhood is not all that! And also the dude on there who wants to be a rapper. Really now? BET the best yall could do was think of a unorganized show with annoying ass kids with some money! So yeah.

  • Shawn says:

Nope its da ghetto laguna beach and i think they jus show it to fill in a time slot cuz BET doesnt have any good shows compared to MTV.

  • LaToya says:

I don’t too much care for it I watch a couple of the shows last night and the girls especially garnett is too stuck up and act like she didn’t even wanna associate with tory or angela the average class girl who was booty dancing on her interest….but the guys they dont seem so stuck on theirselves as the majority of the girls…..i agree with the other replier it should of been in atlanta instead of los angeles…i can’t relate at all with the cast b/c they don’t portray theirselves as ordinary ppl they act as if they are uppy

  • Brina says:

I think its just another show that is supposed to distract us
form what our true priorities are…..It’s nice that those kids have, but
why exploit it all over television. We as a generation of any race should
stop looking and coveting(being jealous of) every one elses things
and get our own. Not because they have it but because you have worked for it and deserve it..

p.s. the show can get tossed in the can right along with
sweet16,laguna, and evey other media scheme that
    uplifts foolishness

  • Chelle says:

Haven’t watched it and don’t intend on watching it. I really do not want to see a bunch of fake, spoiled kids trying to allow me inside their “reality”. BET could have done a lot better than this show, I mean really the commercials for it are terrible and when they were on the BET Awards they seemed a little on the slow side. Is this the end of the original BET??

Anyone who lives in LA knows that Baldwin Hills is ok…its not Beverly Hills, and you do have to travel through the ghetto to get there…Jungles anybody?

The show portrays a bunch of fast ass kids, flossin it up for the cameras.

I cannot relate to any of these children. I’ve had to work for everything I’ve ever had…I’d like to see the show in 5 years when the real world has eaten these kids ALIVE!

  • Christina says:

All of you said what was on my mind about this show but don’t you guys know BET,MTV,MTV TRES, and VH1 are all part of the conglomerate Viacom which is currently run by a black woman?

  • BEYONCE says:

I JUST STARTED WATCHING THE SHOW AND MORIAH IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FINE AND THE SHOW IS COOOOOL 2 :)

  • Tanya Davison says:

I enjoyed the show, but this is coming from a 39-year old mother of three who was raised in the ghetto but now lives in the suburbs of New York. I can relate to both sides. Number one, it’s entertainment! That’s what television is. I won’t run home to catch it on tv, but if nothing else is on, I’ll tune in. Number two, everyone loved The Cosby Show and although the Cosbys weren’t extremely rich, they were able to give their kids everything they wanted, similar to the kids in Baldwin Hills. But the Cosby’s also taught value and didn’t let their kids get away with stupid things. Number three, every few years, television caters to what’s popular. At one time, it was courtroom stories, then there were the problem solving justice shows (NYPD Blue, Law & Order), then the game shows (Who Wants To Be a Millionaire) and now it’s the reality shows. BET knows ratings run high for reality shows, so as much as BET is biting off of MTV, it’s something that all of the television networks do. If you don’t watch Baldwin Hills, BET won’t get high ratings for it and the show will eventually fall to the wayside. If you’d like to see Baldwin Hills improved or a totally different type of show, why don’t you write to BET and offer suggestions as to what you’d like to see instead of writing blogs of what you don’t like. Maybe BET execs will take heed and come up with a better show.

  • newsflash says:

Why is It that black people are so quick to judge and put down each other? I grew up in the Baldwin Hills area and can relate to the show. To me It’s like a fresh of breath air. Being from the area they always are shooting films like Boyz in the Hood, Colors, Baby Boy etc. I watch these movies for the entertainment eventhough I can’t relate to their lifestyles. I remember growing up being from the hills people did look at you different that wern’t from up there. We are all in the same struggle. When you get out in the world you will always have to work harder than caucasions to get the same recognition. Believe me these childrens parents are teaching their children this. Most of the families are at least just one or two generations out of the hood. And do appreciate the things that they have. Just, because you don’t see this remember this is for entertainment. BET is just trying to share their stories, but if the viewers want to complain and not give these kids an oppourtunity It will probably be replaced with all the shows that portray all of us in a negative light. Why can’t we all just get along?P.S. The Cosby’s are exactly like the families portrayed I wonder why they were so successful with there show. Because It was about parents that were doctors and lawyers also. Maybe because he was a celeb, and us black folks worship our celebs. Hmmm

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article, but it sounds interesting

  • Alwaystalking says:

newsflash you need to stop. You missing the point. Nobody is not trying to bring nobody down. You grew up in the Baldwin Hills area so who gives a damn. The whole point is every kid cant relate to this and its just another bullshit show on BET trying to gain attenion from more young viewers! Also I didnt like the cosby show. The reason it was a big hit because it was different and a new beginning in black family shows. Meaning it was trying to show that we too can be successful or lawyers, doctors and etc…. Baldwin Hills show is nothing but a bunch of fast ass kids who mommas and daddies have spoiled and they think that they all that.

  • Magellan says:

What Christina said is true. Viacom owns BET and MTV check out viacom.com and research it. It’s all the same black people dont have their own television station. They just let us think we do, and no black woman runs it, a white man does! but theyre are some black people in the mix. White people control what you watch on tv just like they control hip hop music cuz they own all the major record companies. It’s all about money C.R.E.A.M……..

P.S. LISTEN TO LUPE FIASCO – DUMB IT DOWN it sums up the whole situation about the stranglehold that the white man has on hip hop music!

  • L.A. Gurl says:

First off, everyone that says BET got the show from MTV should do their research on why.

MTV and BET are owned by the same company, VIACOM. VH1 is owned by Viacom too.

So, those who think BET and MTV share ideas and hosts (Ananda Lewis) are correct in that sense because the same Executives give the green light for both networks.

However, I will say that when BET was owned by Bob Johnson the station never had any original programming. Bob Johnson only cared about getting money, which he got from the Infomercials that he ran 24/7 on the weekends. For the 20 something odd years BET was owned by Bob Johnson it never had any original programming, besides Sunday Gospel shows, Rap City and 106 & Park. Oh yeah, Comic view too. All of which I could personally do without, because it’s BORING!

It was a garbage network that soaked up valuable airwaves with trashy irrelevant programming.

Now, I’m not saying any of that has changed but at least they are trying, even if it’s through the minds of the White people, who now own BET.

The fact that people can’t relate to the programming has to do more with the fact that these old geezers don’t have a clue what will inspire young people. Many people can’t relate to MTV’s Laguna Beach, either. I don’t believe it has to do with the content, “so called spoiled kids” as much as it has to do with the fact, that the people they choose to spotlight, are some of the lamest people on the planet.

The kids on the shows like The Hills, Laguna Beach, College Hill, and Baldwin Hills are boring. They are the most boring people to ever grace the face of the earth, and that’s why this trash tv programming seems so hollow and superficial. None of those people have substance.

They don’t aspire to contribute anything to the planet and their everyday lives are about as interesting as a dirty napkin on a floor. Although, a napkin would probably garner more interest as to why it was dirty and how it got on the floor.

Simply put, the shows are garbage because the people they cast are garbage. It’s boring and these older than dirt, ancient television execs, should have to walk the plank for continuing to put this trash on TV. It’s disrespectful to television viewers, and it seems as though their attempts are to dumb us all down. Even if that is the case they could at least do it with half way interesting people.

Furthermore, what pisses me off is the fact that there are no reality shows that follow kids in the ghetto. Which would be more realistic than these Milli Vanilli knock-off kids they have on Baldwin Hills. This trash should be removed from the airwaves A.S.A.P. and replaced with people and content that has more substance than Becky and Johnny.

  • jaquishanatoree.... hay:] says:

yo i love dis show!!!!! it is da bomb… :]

yu black ppl take everything to god dam serious.. fuck yu guys get soooo anoying after a while. stop hatein on other ppl because they have a show and just enjoy it or change the channel! no ones forsing yu to watch it, DUH.

ow an stop trying to act like yur race is sooooo important, where all human beins soo get over yurself. arent yu satisphied that yu have yur own chanel???

    yu know if there was a channel called WET (white entertainment telavision) yu would get angry and start filin law suites… :}

  • Gabby says:

You know what… I’m getting pissed. To Jaquish (Jackass)… whatever. For one, black people ARE important! We don’t have to ACT like our race is important. We matter on this planet just like any other race does!! There’s nothing wrong with feeling important. After being denied access to so many things because of our skin color we DESERVE to feel important now! After being treated like animals… we DESERVE to voice our opinions as a race and describe what we feel should and should not represent us!

And for your damn misspelling information… ALMOST EVERY CHANNEL ON TV IS W.E.T.(WHITE ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION)!!! White people may not come out and directly say that this is a “white” channel but almost every face you see on TV from the PLAYBOY channel to CARTOON NETWORK shows white face ALL THE TIME!!

So of course not those sneaky bastards aren’t going to declare a definite WHITE channel but it is rather stupid if you ALREADY have channels with nothing but white faces on them anyway! From the commercials to the NFL half-time shows you don’t see many black faces! Shit I’m sure black people use the same products you use but they aren’t throwing us in commercials and giving us our own shows unless it destroys the character of the black race!

We have a RIGHT to say that this show only shows people what they assume already: THAT BLACK PEOPLE ARE MATERIALISTIC AND IGNORANT! So the next time you go out and buy a blue-eyed blonde-haired doll for your child… maybe you should get a black doll INSTEAD! If not, then maybe its because YOU think YOUR race is sooooo IMPORTANT!
