Kelis and Nas on the Grammy red carpet

If you watched the Grammys last night, you saw Nas and Kelis rock this look to promote the rapper’s upcoming album of the same word.

This debut will undoubtedly kick off a run of similar promotional gear, so the question is: would you wear it and if so, what statement do you feel you’d be making?

I no there is a hidden message behind it. but it has its bad points aswell. just another thing for white people to talk about.

  • Nayster says:

I don’t think it’s a good idea to have that word posted and branded on things like clothes for people to represent. I’m sure it does have a point, and turns heads, but that’s not a way to get attention. It’s not a word that makes fun of a race, but a word that offends and discriminates. Just gives more reason for people to say it. We need less exposure of that word, not more. Even though people still are going to say it, and think it’s okay to, because you’re a certain color, we shouldn’t continue to refer to ourselves a word that another used to offend us.

  • rich says:

That,s not a good look to me that is ignorant and I repect the word cuz I use it but to wear that at the grammys NO it comes a place and a time and that was not the place.

  • raheem says:

It is a shame that someone of nas’s intelligence would wear somerhing of this sort to the grammies, even though I’m african myself I feel that the struggle was to get away from such deragatory deformation of the blackmans existence and as someone who chooses to inform the masses in his music he should have seen the negative in his acronym

  • 234 says:

Getting desperate for a little bit of publicity. Disrespectful.

  • RICH BOY says:

he might as well get it tattoed on his body, thats not a good look. Nas might have made an acronym out of it, and just hasn’t said anything yet and just let controversy build up. That happens, then album sales. I’ll buy it. But to where it to the grammys, NOT COOL!

  • 40deep says:

Its possible that Nas is pointing out how much America has changed. Since the period of segregation of skin color and the use of the n word, much has changed. Flashing the n word out there like that could possibly be pointing that african americans have came up so far that we are standing on the red carpet at the grammies and flashing the word that they used to call us because they did not like us.

  • Nay says:

I wouldnt wear this. What’s the meassage exactly? Would it become a problem if whites wore it? the logic would be if we can wear it on our clothes than why cant we just walk around sayin it? No matter how you want to spin it, its controversial and disrespectful regardless of who’s wearing it. No cute!

  • kee says:

i dont care who uses the word, i use it on a regular basis. As far as the clothing line. I dont think i would be rocking that gear. It may have a different message but no one would understand. Too many people would get offended and next thing you know white people would start wearing it and getting their asses kicked.

  • L0'renz says:

Somewhere a whiteboy from Conneticut will wear that N199er shirt and will get his face stomped in Compton..

  • Chris J the Genius says:

I think Nas should’ve dressed up for the Grammys. I will continue to support the album because I know that Nas will not let hip-hop down. He definitely has a point to make and I can’t wait to hear it. I think he’s trying to let us know that the album is still coming out because he’s always talking about it and has yet to drop it. Whatever the reason, I’m quite sure that Nas has a lot to say and I’m waiting for that album to drop. Yes indeed, ol’ Nas (pronounced Nazz if you’re Bill O’ Reilly, of course) is about to do it again. Handle it, Nas.

  • Will973 says:

DAT WORD JUS SCREAMS OUT 4 ATTENTION OR TROUBLE, BUT I KNOW WHERE NAS ISZ GOIN WIT THIS…

  • caramelbrown says:

i understand where nas is going with the whole thing. for hundreds of yrs white ppl have owned the word and used it in a derogetory way towards blacks. it doesnt have the same meaning it had dduring slavery so ppl need to relax. its just another example of reverse descrimination. after yrs of slavery we own that word and its up to us to decide whether we want to use it or not. when ppl say my nigga its like my hommie my man. as minorities were the ones that have to work 2times harder than the white man just to be on the same playing field. racisim is alive and well today and because of slaveryhundreds of black ppl had to suffer and were ridiculed. therefore no one can tell us wat we can or cannot say. weve been there, done that. free speech— its our human right.

  • Danielle says:

i think he is just tryna to advirtise the album

  • Guttatized says:

BIG UPS TO NASIR, I THINK WHAT HE HAS DONE IS GREAT…THE ONLY IGNORANCE SHEDING IS WHAT US A PEOPLE MAKE OF IT…I PERSONALLY DON’T THINK THE SLAVES HAD A PROBLEM WITH BEING CALLED A N**GER, H**L, I’LL CALL EVERYONE OF YOU THE N WORD AS FREQUENT AS I LIKE, AND WHAT YOU GONNA DO, BEAT ME…HAHA, YOU TALK ABOUT, IT ONLY GIVES WHITE PEOPLE, SOMETHING MORE TO TALK ABOUT, H**L THEY BEEN TALKING FOR YEARS, ANSWER THIS HOW MANY WHITE PEOPLE DONE BEAT YOUR A$$, PROLLY NONE, BETCHA YO MOMMA DONE GOT IN THAT A$$ WITH SOMETHING MORE THAN A BELT OR SWITCH…NOW ASK YOURSELF, IF THAT’S NOT THA TRUTH…WE ONLY GIVE OTHERS SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT WHEN WE AIR OUT THE NEGATIVITY OF ONE…

  • 40deep says:

caramelbrown im with you on that one

  • killa chris says:

i wouldnt wear it,because im white and its a word that white people used to be racist against african americans, and some still do

but i wouldnt care if i saw an african american in the shirt like some of ya’ll do

  • jikbaby says:

this is some bullshit i guess he going broke or something so he need to sell a million albums so he can get some some money or something i thought we were trying to move on as a people with music being so influential and nas being considered as one of the best rappers his influence is just gonna push us back even further

  • shakey says:

I thought that look was NOT CUTE at all! I thought Kelis actually looked cute w/ the gold pants and the gold frame glasses and earrings but when they turned around!!!that was a HAM!!! i think that he need to take a lil more pride in hisself and his race. i was rather embarrassed by there look!!!!!BLACK POWER

  • jamaica says:

stop tha hatin pllz dey all rich so dey dont even care wat ya sai

  • mrtee says:

lol what a joke!!! got to sell someting its no records sooo wack, good role model for the youngins.shame on u

  • Gustus says:

I won’t wear it as a white person, but i would be proud to see a black person wearing it, because it not only says how proud they are of themselves and thier history, but it also shows how much the modern world has changed in relation to segregation etc, because if there is a black person sitting next to me on the subway, or in line next to me at a store, wearing that shirt celebrates the changes that have been made.

Also if black people want to wipe out the words that refer to them as slaves, and people under the control of white people, they also need to change their last names, cause the majority of those come from the white people who owned them during slavery. If you ask me I think that is a more degrading than people wearing the shirts with the N word on them.

And how can white people get angry at black people celebrating the word? white people ain’t got sh** to talk about.

  • joe says:

yeah… in the early 1900s everyone who was poor was called the n word..
    NOT just blacks.

I feel bad for him he’s not the first one to do this, nas obviously needs attention.

  • HOLA! says:

http://www.reggaetonline.com (check all da new N upcoming artist in da game.
More than daddy yankke u know? YA TU SABE~!

http://www.mundoreggaeton.com (live radio from PR wit all da latest N greatest reggaeton)

Fact:REggaeton outsells internationally N it outsells it here (rap that is).
Why you think Daddy Yankee can sell out madison square garden N da only rapper who can is jay z? What does that tell you (dont bother answering I dont care)

  • Kayla M says:

Let’s way to hear the album before we judge his motives for wearing that shirt.

  • I am not African-American..I am American says:

Honestly I would wear it because I happen to like Nas and know that he have a good reason for this. But that’s the name of his album and there has to be advertisement; so to make T-shirts is one thing but if not that, the hip hop magazines and billboards will make up for it. So the real reason is should people of another race wear it

  • Resses says:

i was looking at the jacket and they shirt like “does that say the N word?” but i thought it couldnt b becaus Nas is to much of a respectable rapper to do something like that,he’s the same one who is saying HIP HOP iS dead,we as a country buried that word last year. he doin somethig that is going to be very conterversial

  • Jon P says:

all the more reason for a white dude to call you one, I think Nas is looking for a diamond album, more buzz, more units sold, more money for nas. They also both look really stupid, nas looks like he knows he’s selling out.

  • BABYGURL18 says:

I DON’T REALLY THINK THAT IS A REALLY GOOD WORD FOR HIM TO CALL WE BLACK PEOPLE THAT DESPITE THE FACT THAT WE WHIT E KIDS UP WHEN WE ARE CALL THOSE NAMES AND NOW A BLACK BRO IS USING IT
TO GET ATTENTION OR WHAT’S THE REASON NAS?

  • BABYGURL18 says:

I MEANT BEAT UP WHITE KIDS

  • FelixTheKitten...Purr!!! says:

I wonder if the Latino’s or the White’s would feel as offended as the Black’s do if we walked around with the word “SPIC” of “CRACKER” on our clothing! If Sex sells then why can’t Ignorance sell???

  • FelixTheKitten...Purr!!! says:

    “Spic” or “Cracker”

  • FelixTheKitten...Purr!!! says:

You know, you guys put serious thought into the stupidest subjects when we should be putting more thought into ourselves and our children! I went onto this website and it’s shit like this that makes me sick to my stomach!
    http://suncanaa.com/memory2008
Forget about words that can’t physically harm us and let’s think about words that can help save these innocent lives that can’t save themselves! So Sad! So, So, Sad!

  • chris says:

i think Nas went ova tha top a little but i think he waz trying 2 make a statement (wasn’t da best way to do it) me personally i would wear a shirt like that jus 2 make a statement 2 all dem racist MF”S out there

  • Darius says:

I think Nas is trying to making money from the word and I think that is not good.

  • Rick Lexington says:

i’m over it and kelis still works my nerves lol. I think people will use this as an exuse for a bunch of BS over the net and claim freedom of speech. What really gets me is why his pants are faded and whats up with the gold tights on kelis. She look like a hood version of peggy bundy.

  • dd says:

i am wondering what is the brand of the gold jeans kelis has on and does anyone know where i can get some similar to those? i know there are some by tripp nyc but they dont make them in my size
