In addition to the eating disorders of anorexia and bulimia comes a new term: drunkorexia.

A drunkorexic, as described by The New York Times, is someone who self-imposes starvation or bingeing and purging with alcohol abuse.

It’s now a serious phenomenon particularly amongst young women, who starve themselves all day to offset the calories they consume by drinking.

“Binge drinking is almost cool and hip, and losing weight and being thin is a cultural imperative for young women in America,” says Dr. Douglas Bunnell, the director of outpatient clinical services for the Renfrew Center, based in Philadelphia.

“Mixing both is not surprising, and it has reached a tipping point in terms of public awareness.”

Do you know anyone who could be described as drunkorexic?
