VIBE magazine’s current issue marks 15 vibrant years of quality hip-hop and R&B music and culture reportage.
What would a celebration of one of the most successful urban publications be without acknowledging one of urban fashion’s pioneers, Karl Kani?
In an article titled “Behind the Seam Dreams”, Karl Kani is listed first in a list of 15 of the most “definitive sportswear brands”.
“No brand inspired me because there was none [before me],” Kani says. “My inspiration stemmed from the fact that there weren’t any black designers in the market and the clothing choices at the time were not made for us.”

Yes, indeed, props to Kani for starting a revolution in urban fashion. Before him we had T.R.O.O.P, Triple Fat Goose, striped Lee Jeans, Skidz, Travel Fox, Bally, Playboy, Kangol, JV, CHAMPION, and all the fake-a@@ Gucci, Fendi, MCM, Louis Vuitton, and FENDI fake, flea market clothing money could buy.
Kani took it to the next level and made it all fresh in a unique way.
