Jena 6 member shoots himself
A young man who was part of the Jena 6 shot himself in an apparent suicide attempt.
It was reported that Mychal Bell was afraid his recent shoplifting crime would affect his future football career and he was also “tired of all the media attention” surrounding his arrest.
He was trying to stay on a straight path since his arrest for the Jena 6 case.
Mychal’s wound is in his right chest and is reportedly not life-threatening.
For those who don’t know about Jena 6, this was the name given to a group of 6 black teenagers who attacked and beat a white classmate in Jena, Louisiana.
The attack was sparked by a series of incidents that reflected the town’s racial tension.
One particular incident involved one of the new black kids in school sitting under the “white tree”, where it was understood that only white students could sit
Three white students then hung up nooses on the tree the next day.
Throughout all this drama, the white students were usually just given a “slap on the wrist”, while the black students were punished more severely.
After the beating, Jena 6 faced extremely long jail sentences, and this ignited major protests from civil rights groups.
They fought against what they believed was racial discrimination, and the charges were eventually reduced.
