Academy Award nominations announced
Taraji P. Henson stars with Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards (fondly known as the “Oscars”) were announced this morning.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a romantic fantasy starring Brad Pitt, Taraji P. Henson and Cate Blanchett leads the pack with 13 nominations, including Best Actor for Pitt and Best Supporting Actress for Henson.
Critics’ favorite Slumdog Millionaire received 10 nominations and The Dark Knight had eight nominations, but other than the late Heath Ledger‘s Best Supporting Actor nod, the blockbuster scored only in technical categories such as cinematography, visual effects and editing.
Veteran actor Mickey Rourke is nominated for Best Actor for his role as a lonely, hard-luck wrestler in The Wrestler, as is Sean Penn (for Milk) for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, the camera store owner whose decision to campaign for a place on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors becomes a landmark event within the gay rights movement.
The Academy Awards will screen live on February 22nd at 5pm PST/8pm EST on ABC.
