The Classic Cool Champion
Champion became a hit in the urban market during the early 90′s.
You could catch artists like Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest and Jay-Z rocking their classic hoodies, crew necks and more.
We just experienced a very 80′s influenced era, and now the more clean contemporary looks of the 90′s are being heavily embraced. Think Dickies pants, British Knights, and plain Champion crewneck sweatshirts.
Beyond being popular in the urban market, Champion is also the clothing company that invented the sports bra, reversible t-shirts, breathable mesh clothing and also produced uniforms for the NBA.
Today, you can see rappers like Nas, The Game and more still showing their Champion loyalty.
Nas is just one of the many rappers to mix Champion sweaters into lyrics. He rapped “I’m a braveheart in Carhartt and Champion hoodies” in 2003′s “Too Much For Me”.
In the article below, 50 Cent calls Champion the “classic cool” and says he had to get back to the design of the “super deep hood”.
The Champion “Superhood” became the most popular hoodie to rock in the streets of NYC.
With plenty of colors to match back to sneakers and hats, it remains a simple and versatile piece. In fact many stores designed New Era caps to match back to the Superhood.
