Paris Hilton

We asked in a post earlier today, “guess which celebs are high school dropouts?”. We stand corrected – only two of these stars are high school dropouts, not three.

But a few of them didn’t quite make it through college…

Answers:

Leonardo DiCaprio and Paris Hilton both dropped out of high school.

Kanye West graduated from high school, then attended Chicago State University. He dropped out due to poor grades and his passion to make music.

Jennifer Lopez made it through high school, but dropped out of a program at Baruch College in NYC to pursue a dancing career.

Kerry Washington earned a theater degree from the The George Washington University in NYC.

Terrance Howard got his degree in chemical engineering from Pratt University in NYC.

David Banner graduated with a business degree from Southern University in LA, then pursued his master’s in education at the University of Maryland.

Halle Berry went on to major in broadcast journalism after high school, at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, OH (degree incomplete).

Check out what Kanye said about dropping out of school during a high school appearance a few years ago:

“It is true you can be successful without [college], but this is a hard world, a real world, and you want every advantage you can have. I would suggest to people to do all that you can. When I dropped out of school I had worked in the music industry and had checks cut in my name from record labels and had a record deal on the table, and when I wasn’t successful and Columbia said, ‘We’ll call you,’ I had to go back and work a telemarketing job, go back to the real world, and that’s how life is. Life is hard. Take advantage of your opportunities.”

Following this, the Kanye West Foundation teamed up with Musicland for a contest, called the “Free U. College Giveaway”, which awarded one winner $150,000 toward college.

Are you in school? If so, we’d love to hear what our readers are doing and if you’re enjoying it!

College is a great experience….I think everyone should try to go if the opportunity is given! I went to a community college for like 1 semester but it wasn’t for me, now I’m pursuing a fashion merchandising degree online. Maybe one day I’ll be workin for dr jays…..

  • If you work for dr jays hook it lol.

But college is what you put into it. I just graduated and I’ll be receiving a degree in engineering. Overall it was a good experience and I’m glad I went through it.

My advice is to pick your college wisely and if you get staff that gives a damn pick their head for information and their experiences. You can learn a lot.

why would paris have to go to school at all? lol. But i was so wrong. Oh and congrats Rick. I’m still in school, i’ll be one of those 6 years at a 4 year University students, lol. But I WILL finish:)

I started college at the age of 22, where most people of that age already graduated, working on a high-paying job, and so forth but due to some circumstances that is beyond my control, I didn’t go to college after I graduated high school so I had to do what I must to survive.

I went to a junior college where I majored in Graphic design for 5 years, for I was working also on the side to pay some bills. However, i got a job offer in NorCal that I had to drop out, but also to recharge so i’ll be fresh as new.

My brother dropped out of school in 2003 because of work and he’s being working since. Now, i’ll be 29 years old within a month, and after almost two years of “recharging”, I guess it’s already time to go back to school, hopefully in the fall. I just can’t wait.

don’t feel bad dave. i started college at 20 cause i couldn’t afford college i joined the air force at 19, but couldn’t go to school til I was finished with my training. now i get to go to school for free. i’ve been going to school part time for five years now and am finally coming up on my clinical psych BA next spring, i’ll be 26 the end of this year.

I feel that Paris Hilton should have stayed in school. It may would have prepared her an independent life. Even though her dad has money and everything, we are in a recession and hotel rooms are not needed much anymore because many people are not traveling like they used to. If she had her own, she wouldn’t be concerned because doing guest apperances and lip singing is not going to get her far. Leonardo is very successful on the other and he probaly stopped because he had a great opprotunity and pursued it. Look at him now.

  • Jovan says:

In the end college is truly a path that is very beneficial and in hindsight going back and finishing up my degree in Political Science at Roosevelt University was truly the right decision for me.There is a high premium placed on education in our society and that will be true for a long time because of the information and people that one is exposed to in college. That shouldn’t dismiss that there are many people who decided that college isn’t for them but one should still understand that people who have stronger networks will probably do better regardless of education. In the end I would tell someone that if you don’t feel college is for you or unaffordable to work a job that will enable you to survive until you find your passion and study all that it wil take to be successful in that field. The amount of work that one does for free will predict your success for the thing you have passion for whether it is formal education or informal. The choice will always be in possession of the individual.

You have the rest of your life to be an adult, work, have a family, etc. If given the opportunity, why not go to college where you can learn, meet other goal oriented peers, find yourself and grow up in a safer environment? There are very talented, hard working individuals who are fortunate enough to have great opportunities that are worth pursuing and delaying college (Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, LeBron James et al). But be honest with yourself – delaying college to hang with your friends and work at Mickey D’s is not a great opportunity and does not require extraordinary talent.

  • Topel says:

I’m currently in college and will be graduating in May (YEAH!) will two bachelors. Overall I appreciate the opportunities I’ve been given. I think it’s terrible that only 1% of the people on our planet attend college; but I feel humbled to be part of that elite group. I work with teens from underprivileged communities or who will be first generation college attendees, and I always tell them that college opens your mind to things you probably wouldn’t think about. Religion, politics, fashion, whatever! I feel that college has helped me realize and improve my natural abilities, and to think differently. I know that I watch the news differently than someone who didn’t go to college; I see the world and it’s opportunities differently because of the education I’ve received.

It’s been hard, but anything in life that is worthwhile is worth the effort.

  • Dee says:
