When it comes to musical talent shows, performers typically need to showcase their distinct vocals by either “going for it” by belting out an upbeat tune or showing their range with a tug-at-the-heart-strings ballad.
On American Idol this week the 13 contestants perform selections from Michael Jackson‘s vast library.
This was clearly a challenge as Michael has a signature style and so many iconic songs. How does one pull if off without sounding like karaoke?
Only four performances were worthwhile (Adam w/ “Black or White”, Lil w/ “The Way You Make Me Feel”, Danny w/ “PYT”, and Allison w/ “Give In To Me”). The other nine ranged from “pretty darn inoffensive to okay”, as they were betrayed more by their song selection than by their
stage presence or actual talent.
It would be very difficult for someone to credibly pull off say, “Billie Jean” or “Thriller”. Likewise, Randy’s advice to one contestant to go with “She’s Out of My Life” could have been a disaster, unless the performance ended with “Tito, get me a tissue”.
I’d go with a decent track that allowed for some range but was not quite as popular as some of Michael’s monster hits.
Perhaps:
“I Can’t Help It”
“I Wanna Be Where You Are”
“The Way You Make Me Feel”
“This Place Hotel”
Or if you knew you were on your way out anyway, why not go off on a tangent and go with:
Jermaine Jackson‘s “Let’s Get Serious”
