“A Recovering Sneakerhead” by the NaNYC

“I haven’t checked Hypebeast or Niketalk in months. I do occasionally google ‘Jordan release dates’. However I would no longer categorize myself as a hardcore sneakerhead. Most of my friends don’t anymore either. Have we just grown up or has the game gone dead?

“Don’t get me wrong – if I walk into a sneaker boutique and I see something just perfect, or if there’s a deal to be had on Fulton Street, I can’t pass that up. But my days of anticipation and over-paying are definitely over. I’m about to sell off my collection, which at the peak had some 250+ pairs and contained some prize possessions only people that were in the game years and years ago even remember; names like Heineken, Espo’s, and Homer for collectors nowadays probably mean nothing!

“I’m done lining up in front of a boutique, paying $200 over retail price and being abused by cocky, boutique wannabe skaters. I’ll just cop my kicks from good ol’ DrJays.com and the stores. It’s where kids bought their sneakers 20 years ago and it’s where kids will still buy their sneakers.

“The fad of the boutique is over. I’m not traveling to another borough on the subway to buy the same sneaker just to get a bag that says, ‘I bought this shoe at some snooty store with red carpets and paid $50 more to buy the same sneaker’ – since Nike ships most of the same shit everywhere.

“I’m eyeing these three blazers and you know as an ex-sneakerhead, I’m buying all three. Still recovering I guess!

“PS. I’m gonna smack whoever buys the last 7.5!”

I concur its just silly to do that anymore I think my collection boasted over 200 pairs and I felt it got silly to over pay for some sneakers waiting days in line fro a release of a shoe!!! Take the AIR YEEZY!!! Very rare the shoe retailed for 170 it sold in stores for 600 and ebay 750 this is way overboard for a shoe that couldve been massed produced and this Kayne who made him the authority on exclusive sneakers? Im done tho capitalism is a real shame and thats the problem with America thing of other things in the countrty we overpay for homes cars food and all you do is swipe a card then next thing you know you 20 grand in debt and you want to file bankrupty and taxpayers got to pay for the lost

    Very cool post!

  • Yeah I feel that. I’m not a sneaker head but I can relate. Some of my homies have stopped too and they did it for yeeeeeaaaars. It just ain’t the same anymore. Too many people in it for the wrong reasons.
