“The Demise of the Label Whore”

Label Whore (noun) – Someone who only wears brand name clothes, with the name of the brand usually placed somewhere for all to see. A walking advertisement for a clothing store or brand.

We all know at least one label whore.  Maybe it’s that at-your-job chick with the Tory Burch flats, Fendi belt, D&G bag, YSL tee and Louis Vuitton headscarf. Maybe it’s the guy on the train with the Louis Vuitton printed short set and Gucci sneakers. Maybe it’s you. Either way, I’m officially over it! If you can afford to be laced in only the best, more power to you. However, if you think that the oversized initials on your sunglasses make you a cooler person, you are sadly mistaken.

For most of us, the lure of designer fashion is something to give in to occasionally. It’s a splurge for a quality piece, a gift, or a limited edition, rare find. I love to shop. No denying that. I love it so much that I found a job that feeds my habit. My wardrobe is definitely sprinkled with some pricey labels, but I’m also stocked with plenty of no name goodies from the likes of H&M, Zara and Forever 21. Never will you catch me on the street looking like this guy:

Soulja Boy

(Now for the shameless buyer plug…)

Baby Phat has definitely taken note of the “less is more” trend and has completely revamped their philosophy for Fall ’09. Farewell to the days of the glitter cat and PHAT on the ass. Baby Phat is cleaning up their look from head to toe.

Some say that the “true” Baby Phat customer is going to miss her slinky, foil cat plastered on every available inch. Others look forward to the evolution as Baby Phat enters a more “chic” arena.

Personally, I look forward to the new look.  Call me a visionary, but I believe the day of the discreet fashionista are here to stay because nobody likes a ho.

That’s fo’ sho.

  • I’m surprised no one has said this but that is a good blog, miss kris.

I know people like that. Hell at times I’ve been called that lol, only because I’ll msg the brands of the outfit I just put together. I think the clean era will be here for a while but it will revolve as usual. It is a little harder for people to hide behind the label now of days though, but they still name drop. People feel the same way, they’re just over it.

I know a girl that puts together some dope outfits and looks like she’s spending bank on them but she’s not. She just has incredible tastes. And an incredible body to pull of the outfits lol.

Haha forever 21. I got intro’d to that for a homegirls birthday. They have some dope stuff there. Name brands are cool if you like their cut, style etc. But if your just getting it to rub in peoples faces or name drop. Good luck with that.

I confess to being label junkie, but not alot of designer. If you have to save for it, you can’t afford it. I ‘m an urban brand girl. Baby Phat to be precise. I have B P phone covers, purses, cd cases, keychains, perfumes, outfits, shoes, jewelry, backpacks, lingere. I even have B Phat custom interior in my car. I know its sad. LOL. But honestly, its not because I think its cool or feel the need to advertise. I only buy pieces I would wear anyway. Label or not. Also, I admire Kimora turning the company into what it is. I also admire her idea that its a brand for everyone.

I do have alot of off brand stuff. Very few designer pieces, but I completely admire girls who can put together any piece , rather its label or not, and look like a designer put it together. Thats talent.
