EJ King

At the age of only 22, EJ King has styled stars like Day 26, Meagan Good, Beyoncé, Lil Wayne and many more.

He grew up in Orange County and Moreno Valley in CA, until he moved to Las Vegas during his high school years.

After graduating high school, EJ moved back to CA and studied fashion design at RCC.

Currently residing in L.A., EJ’s credits include shoots for MTV, Black Men magazine, styling stars for the Grammys and much more.

Kiki got a chance to find out who EJ’s favorite celebrities are to work with, how he got his start in the industry, and how he is living proof that when one door closes another one often opens.

Check out the interview below:

DrJays.com: Who have been some of your favorite artists to work with?
EJ: That is very hard to say. I love different things about each person I work with, and learn something new each time. I like working with T-Pain, his work ethic is crazy and he is super talented.

Working with the new pop group Sophia Fresh allows me to have fun with clothes and think outside the box when it comes to styling. They are some of the coolest and crazy girls ever.

Styling the guys of Day 26 has been really cool. I never imagined how much of a challenge it would be dressing five guys…it gets crazy but so worth it in the end!

The guys are mad funny, talented and really down to earth. They’re almost like big brothers to me. Each one of them brings something different to the table.

DrJays.com: When did you know styling was your calling, and how did you break out on the scene?

EJ: When I was around nine or ten years old, I started dressing my mom and any other family member or friend who would allow me to play dress up! I was always into fashion and hair styling.

My grandmother would say “you will be a star in fashion, TV, or some part of the entertainment business!”. Breaking on to the scene was not that hard for me.

I was working at this plant making paste makers at one point. We had to wear all white in this all white room. It was the most boring thing ever but the money was good.

One day I got a call to do the blockbuster movie Dream Girls, and I asked my mom if I should go to work or go and do the movie. Well I choice the movie, and when I got to back to work they were like “sorry, we’re going to have to let you go”.

I took that as a sign and went off to work with my friend, video model Bria Myles. After styling her for a few magazine shoots, her publicist Echo Hattix found me on set and took me under her wing as her personal assistant.

I started to learn about PR, doing Hollywood events, red carpets and getting into the Hollywood circle. A actress/model/publicist by the name of Hazel Eyez introduced me to Meagan Good, Lauren London, and many other celebrities.

From there I met stylist Seannita Parmer, Fashion Director at King magazine. This allowed me the opportunity to style for King and continue to gain many more clients.

DrJays.com: What are your top wardrobe essentials for this summer?

I’d have to say a pair of sick dark glasses, my Blackberry, bottle of either John Varvatos or Prada Milano cologne, my MacBook Pro laptop, crazy kicks and my “murse”, aka “man purse” (laughs).

DrJays.com: Which trends do you think need to disappear ASAP?

Wow…some feelings may be hurt, but strappy low heels (prom shoes), knock-off Herve dresses and nakedness in general. Also dresses with sneakers, and tacky lace front wigs.

DrJays.com: Describe a typical day or week in the life of EJ.

Well I hop up out the bed, turn my swag on, then take a look in the mirror and say what’s up (laughs).

Just kidding! My days usually consist of me waking up to at least nine missed calls and 25+ Twitter updates and emails everyday. First, I say a prayer of thanks and read a chapter of my Joyce Meyers book.

joycemeyer

On average, I’m in clothing showrooms at least three times a week, preparing for some type of event, show or tour. Lately I’ve been on either a flight or tour bus, in about three different cities per week!

And now that I think about it, that’s pretty much it…just over and over again. Work never stops! I truly love what I do and it’s where my passion lies.
DrJays.com: Any tips for young aspiring stylists out there?
I would advise this to anyone, keep God first. I am a living testimony of doors being open with a key of faith the size of a mustard seed.

Do understand that if your passion is styling, it’s kind of the hardest position on the “glam squad”. You must be patient and able to deal with attitudes, different personalities and pleasing everyone from the artist/actor to to the record label or team behind them.

At the end of the day, do what truly makes you happy, what you feel is your calling, and you will have no choice but to excel!
