DrJays.com Debate: Should Rappers be Flaunting their Bling?
You may have already caught this recent video of Soulja Boy showing off his new black diamond remote control Lamborghini chain…and how it matches his black diamond ring…
“Rich Ni**a Sh*t”, he calls it.
As you can imagine, the media had a field day with this one.
BET responded with an article titled “Come Get This Fool”, and as many celebrities are doing these days, Soulja Boy used Twitter to defend himself.
He posted a link to his blog where he clarified that he did not pay for the chain, but got it as a birthday gift, and that people don’t have the right to judge him on what he does with his money.
Check out some excerpts from his rant:
“Why do the media blow up the things that they think will make me look stupid or ignorant. Why not publicize or put me in the spotlight when I do positive things?
“What about when I was in the hood this past Christmas passing out toys to everybody on the westside of Atlanta where I grew up why not show that on TV? Why not publicize my Little league football team that I sponsor in Batesville, MS or the money I donated to help build the rec center and boyz and girls club!? What about when I donated $25,000 for all those kids to have a good Christmas with the Toyz n da hood foundation?
“Why not step in when Ice-T was dissing me why not call up and have a sit down to squash that beef. THINK ABOUT IT A 40 YEAR OLD SOMETHING GANGSTA NI**A VS. A 16 YEAR OLD KID (AT THE TIME). What if he really did have O.G. crip ni**az that had a price on my head to murder me? WHY DIDN’T YOU TRY TO STEP IN AND STOP THAT? HUH?
“I know America probably ain’t ready for a young black rich ni**a running around doing it how he had it planned since he was little. But i’m from the hood! This is all I know!
“All I grew up seeing was diamondz, money, drugs, fightin, shootin, dancing, basketball and football. real nigga shit that’s all I was around while I grew up! I don’t know shit else! I got signed when I was 16 and it took me away from that environment and put me on a whole other level that blew my mind.
“I’m just being ME that’s all I can be! im out 100 ROLE MODEL OR NO ROLE MODEL IM ONLY HUMAN”.
First of all, Soulja Boy can’t be that stupid – he must have known what kind of reaction this video was going to get, so why do it when the end result is having to explain yourself?
T-Pain is another case. He showed off his ridiculous “BIG ASS CHAIN” a couple of months ago, making sure we all know that it was made of real diamonds.

T-Pain
Despite the fact that these rappers may contribute to the community in some positive ways, do you think that they should be flaunting their bling like this when we all are well aware that of their wealth?
As stated in the article by BET, Soulja Boy is a role model to kids whether he likes it or not.
Is this a positive message, showing kids what they can have if they work hard, or could it possibly motivate kids to get in trouble to obtain these riches?
Please share your thoughts!

Real Real Corny classless but its his money but wow this totally tasteless he is a sterotype for real
see nothn wrong with it ..thier bread do what you want with it …get tierd of buying the same things get creative u kno u got the money have fun with it ya digg
I really don’t like when rappers are too flashy and I agree that if you have to give an excuse for your behavior then you probably should refrain from acting a fool or whatever the case.Soulja Boy is a young dude and still has a lot of growing up to do and I have no words for T-Pain and his huge statement of a chain.Maybe some rappers splurge on buying these items to show that they’re living the good life or and they have the money do it all but bottomline…
LESS IS MORE!!
some rappers stress wealth because they’re trying to make you think there richer than they really are.
Like Big Gee of Boyz N Da Hood said “i’ve had a deal for a year but my lights ain’t on.”
1. Soulja planned that shit. Otherwise he wouldn’t of been frontin the video. And he was implying that he bought that ish at around 1:46. And then he crashes the shit.
And ok he put that statement about him doing all the donations and what not. But where are his videos of him doing the donations and what not? All there is are vids of him braggin, talkin shit, beefin etc. Put out by him. Because that’s the image he want to portray. The nigga is in the parking lot trying to donuts in a lambo. I mean TI did vids of him doing charity work etc. So him attacking the media is like him attacking himself. Because he’s providing evidence.
2. It’s their money and they can do what they want. At least if your going to do shit… DO IT RIGHT! Ok someone got a $50 dollarish x mod and basically b dazzled with diamonds. That’s stupid at least get the higher end kyosho mini z version which is $150 plus. Or if your going to brag about it. Do the controller up to.
Seriously that’s the shit I hate about this generation. Niggas got it way too easy now, so they try to come up with bullshit, talk shit, turn it into a cause so they can get attention, but they tryin to swear its genuine. Yet when there is a real cause, niggas don’t got a pair no more. That’s just bitch shit.
1. Why is Soulja Boy considered a role model? Im pretty sure these “kids” today have their own parents
2. Big Chains look stupid to me
3. BET are the LAST people that should have a say on this matter. 90% of the videos they air show nothing BUT Bling, sex, drugs, etc….
4. What you do with your money is your business
5. Let talk about people who buy $100,000 houses for their dogs
i dont think now is the time to flaunt bling since we are in a recession…rappers should consider that before showing off because most people nowadays cant relate
Its their dough they can do what they want, but my opinion too much especailly T-Pain’s chain just looks stupid anyway. He’s obviously tryin to compensate and even says it in his songs.
All the dudes that are constantly whineing/singin about girls wasn’t tryin to holla at em til they got paid, “now my Gramma ain’t the only one callin me baby” its apparent why they are extra extravagent with the bling. Kind of sad and pathetic when I think about it that way, lol, dam!
RICK LEXINGTON TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUTTA MY MOUTH AGAIN! You’re the one who put the camera on yourself with your new chain. Why didn’t you put the camera on yourself when you did all those other things? That is, IF you did it? And since when is it the media’s job to defend artists and try to explain their behavior and put them in a positive light? It’s your job, Soulja Boy (keyword being B-O-Y) to represent yourself in a positive light. The camera can only show what you do in front of it.
I think it’s all disgusting and ignorant. I understand it’s there money and hey they wanna do it but flaunting it to the people that support you is braggadocios. This is where hip-hop has been heading and I got off that train along time ago. I refuse to support people of this caliber. I just can’t wait to see in a couple of years how that big ass chain is gonna be melted and pawned so he could afford his house. I don’t find soulja boy to be a role model at all. B.E.T encourage this so I find them to hypocritical.
Oh yeah whad up Rick and Chris J
WHAT THEY DO WITH THEY MONEY IS KNOWN OF OUR BUSINESS I PERSONALLY DON’T CARE. DA PEOPLE SITTIN AROUND WATCHING EVERY MOVE OF LIFE FROM TWITTER TO MYSPACE NEED TO GET ONE OF THERE OWN. BECAUSE WAT ANOTHER DUDE GOT DON’T AFFECT ME AND MY FAMILY AT ALL. YOU MAY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH WAT THEY BUY BUT DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS SPENT IN TAXES AND DONATIONS TO CHARITY. SOME PEOPLE NEED TO CHECK THERE SELF
AND JASON DA NUMBER 3 ON YOUR LIST IS SO TRUE WITHOUT DA SOULJA BOIS AND T PAINS THER WOULDNT BE A BET. SO THEY NEED TO KEEP TO THEY BUSINESS
i cant wait till soulja boy go broke i know it would happen soon
2 or 3 points id like to make
1. this is why hip hop is dead
2. whitney houston said the children are our future. WE’RE DOOMED as chuckie from rugrats would say.
3. doing donuts in a lambo is stupid. you have money but it apparently didnt buy you any wisdom because if it did you wouldnt be doing donuts in a strip mall parking lot especially in a lambo i swear muhfukas get some ends they lose what sense God gave em 9 years ago he was what ever his name was before he dreamed up soulja boy tell em. Im a fan of twitter but hiding behind a twitter account and defending yourself from that aspect is being a coward. if u dont want people ridiculing you dont do anything RIDICULEus key word being ridicule as in being an object of ridicule. Be smart about what you do in the public eye if u wanna do donuts in a lambo dont youtube it if u dont want people saying stupid shyt if u dont want beef from sellouts like Ice-T when he says f**k soulja boy ignore it thats not being a punk thats being mature. and if you dont want BET saying things about you do both things and maybe and this is a big azz maybe people might see you as a role model take notes from Jay and TI and Yeezy thats why you wasnt invited on the swagga like us song because you doing dumb shyt everyone else in the game is seein u like they saw barack obamas pastor during the election they like “dang man dont fukk it up for us yet man let us get ahead for a minute damm” u settin hip hop back only thing SB is doin is sellin ringtones and some shoes and clothes which has always been done but all the added stuff like lambo r/c chains and t pains big azz chain is not furthering hip hop. the whole premise of hip hop is to tell a story not show how stupid you can be im not saying he’s the only one im just saying the problem starts with ringtone rap.
Whaddup lux, chris, yung.
Actually there would be a bet without tpain and soulja boy. BET was there before and it’ll be there after. Bet’s and other companies problem is favoritism. They would eventually accept other talent or face going out of business, if there was a lack of those two.
Oh and that was in no way a donut. He was just driving around the parking lot trying to do a donut.
Sadly he is a role model. There are people that want to be like him *shakes head* A lot of parents let screens raise their kids. Now people just point finger, pass blame. Parenting is reduced to “oh you fell down a manhole while you weren’t paying attention and texting while walking? Because everyone is supposed to look out for you. Well lets sue them and get paid.” And there are parents that don’t care until it affects their pocket.
The real problem is the role models we choose. For example, stop doing what ACTORS tell you to. Most actors are DUMBER than the rest of us, so why are you listening to them? Same thing with models and pro athletes. Not all of them are bad, and some are worthy role models, but please get the facts before you put any weight on their words.
For the record, I don’t think that most rappers are dumber than average – in fact, they’re probably as smart if not smarter. But the same advice holds true: do some research and use your brain when deciding who to pay attention to and who to ignore.
Rick Lexington is the ish. You hit the nail right on the head again, my brotha. We’re letting television raise our children. Therefore, either parents will have to step up and take back the influence and control they once had of their children’s upbringing, or those who create and produce the images songs and characters on our television will have to be more responsible. Or, of course, there could be a combination of the two. I’m not naive enough to bet on either, I’m just sayin’.
Oh, and shouts to Lux!
OOOOOOHHH, can we all say “HATERS”…. SB gettin his money just like anybody else thats workin gettin their money. Whatever you can afford, throw it on youtube and flaunt it and stop hatin on the next man. Next subject….
to the genius saying that we are hating on soulja boy were not hating we’re pointing out his ignorance there is a difference between ignorance and being stupid ignorance is not being knowlegeable about something and being stupid is having the knowledge and doing it anyway. He falls under the latter for the fact he had the knowledge to do everything else he has acomplished (allbeit minimal) honestly his acomplishments are not that suprising for the fact that u get enough attention doing something enough people will be foolish enough to spend there parents money on something they will eventually delete honestly we’re paying this kid so many cents for a 10 second ringtone? no wonder we’re in a recession wasteful spending on things that have no use but to let the rest of the free world know who u listen to and do so annoyingly. I know the pot really cant call the kettle black im guilty of buying ringtones too, but tell me how enough people bought crank that and made it platinum on ringtone sales youtube is a useful tool to express ideas but not so much so it would cause this much of a craze. honestly i havent seen this much of a craze over one boy (he’s not even a man) since bobby brown or God rest his soul, Michael Jackson. but i cant even compare those 2 gentlemen to what ever name his mother gave him. michael did what he did with old school flavor as well as bobby brown. I can honestly say 10 years down the road nobody will remember what he did for hip hop other than sell a ringtone. any other artist that has came and went may have been one hit wonders but they either created a dance nobody will forget or made a song thats instantly recognizeable. he will never be a legend of hip hop nobody will ever say ” man that soulja boy, he is one of the greats” even bow wow which i think is a better mc than him will be remembered as a actor as well as artist i honestly cant even call him a rapper because a rapper is as keith murray one said “metaphorical lyricist, descriptive writer” Im not some old cat on here im only 25 but honestly this generation that followed after us gen y people something happened somewhere idk how but rappers from like 05 and up dont rap about nothing even plies shawty lo gucci OJ da juice man (i would have came up with a better name) their lyrical content is 10x better i like a rappers rapper someone a rapper thats 5-6 years in the game can say ” he will be here for a while and for the right reasons”
I think its freedom of choice,I say do you….BUT… also we as minorities have to be careful because the media thrives on their perception of negativity.I think with the money alot of rappers have, they cant complain about the media when they have the means to project themselves in a positive light.Maybe instead of broadcasting your chain, you might want to hire your own media team,a team that you have have control over whats displayed for everyone in the WORLD to see.Alot of rappers dont address the positive until the media brings out the negative. Its as if they use the positive as a scapegoat to balance the negative. So I say do you but dont complain about the consequences of you doing you…NOW B.E.T….booooo…I wonder if they and Oprah are still giving away fried chicken then criticizing the black community about obesity(by the way which she probably hasnt been in since Color Purple),the best thing about B.E.T. is Cousin Jeff,no bias,no BS.That station is utter foolishness but its embraced because thats all we have. Its alot more to the black community than what they show and when other people watch it,alot of them assume thats all black people. They do half of what theyre capable of with that station. With that said B.E.T.=Booooo,everything that says black doesnt mean we have to support it,Soulja boy=Hire a media team and quit saying dumb $h!t,T-Pain=take that BIG @$$ CHAIN,cash it in and stop the genocide in Congo with that money…Shout out to Cornell West & Michael Eric Dyson…lol…100
This is crazy. So what its his money he earned it himself weather you like his music or not…… Tpain’ s s*** look wack anyway but SB is still a youngin how u expect him to act. He gave back to the community at least. And while yall up in here complaining how a rapper spends his money u should get out there and get sum money yo deamn self
Its Dey Bread They Can Do What They Want Also Think ABout It If THey Never Showed Shit Off It Would B Kinda Boring Don’t You Think??
just watch the banned episodes of the boondocks about bet. Those episodes are 100% true about bet
