Game, Set & Match: 2009 US OPEN Tennis Championships
Tomorrow, Monday, August 31st, will launch the largest major sporting event in the US : The 2009 US OPEN Tennis Championships.
The US OPEN is a star-studded end of summer event, drawing tens-of-thousands of fans, celebrities, and all major tennis stars from across the planet.
Watch as they converge on NYC’s USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, to battle for the last Grand Slam title of the 2009 sporting season.
Saturday was the soft launch of the Tournament, gracing audiences with a day of concert performances from Pop star and American Idol winner Jordan Sparks, R&B newcomer 15-year-old Usher protégé Justin Biebe, friendly competition from tennis mega-stars like Serena Williams and Roger Federer, and even jokes from comedian Will Ferrell to lighten up the televised affair.
However on Monday all jokes and friendly competition will be put aside, competitors will put on their game faces, and fierce competition will began.
Defending womens and mens US OPEN Champions, Serena Williams and Roger Federer, will look to keep their crowns while a host of competitors attempt to snatch the title.
Roger Federer was fortunate this season with Rafeal Nadal sitting out injured, allowing Fed to finally capture his elusive French Open crown and surpass Pete Sampras career slam title count at with 15 grand slams. Rafael Nadal will return as the arch nemesis of the incredible Fed.
This will be a special tournament for Serena Williams and African Americans everywhere as it marks the 10 year anniversary of her first Grand Slam title win.
Serena was the first African American woman champion of the a white dominated sport in over 50 years, with 11 grand slam titles on her resume.
Her emergence began a new era in sports history, as both she and her sister Venus became the most famous sister act and family duo in all sport.
