Where Has Real Hip-Hop Gone?

One of the coldest MC's: Lauryn Hill
This entire week on my way to work I’ve been jammin’ to the 1998 classic album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
For some strange reason, I can’t keep it outta the deck. The feel, the heart, the flyness, the freshness of this CD trips me out. I really wanna stop my car in the middle of Houston traffic (some of the craziest you’ll ever see in America – ask somebody), put the car in park, bob my head and really listen to what Ms Hill is saying.
When you thoroughly listen to Miseducation, everything slows down a little. Some of the things going on in your life have a little more clarity to them. I had to sit back and think to myself, “I know good music – so why am I so intrigued [by his album]? Am I trippin?” Then I catch myself and start to realize what it is.
I often turn on my stereo and listen to music that has absolutely no method (and all madness). Nonsense, foolishness. I’ve become so hypnotized by it that I almost start to lose my sense of good taste. So “real hip-hop” – Outkast, Lupe Fiasco, The Cool Kids, Nas, etc – where have you gone? I see you every once in a while like a full moon. You peek your head out from around the bushes, but I never see you in full bloom anymore.
When I listen to tracks like Ms. Hill’s “Superstar” and “Final Hour”, I hear something rare. Something pure. Raw but not unadulterated. Music that’s serious and fun all at the same time. I don’t ever get a chance to feel that anymore.
The question I’m asking is, where are the real spitta’s at? There used to be a time where real MC’s were all you heard. People say everything comes back in style, so maybe I’ll get what I am askin’ for?

As far as Lauryn Hill is concerned, there is a compelling argument that the essence of hip hop – or at least the prominence of that essence – left when she did.
Oh, and props for the shout-outs to Nas and Lupe Fiasco. Two of the best to ever do it.
Lupe all day. I have most of his songs and he is the only artist i’ve paid money for a song. i need to get shining down
i think rapper are becoming more business concious than the real art,Lupe and Nas for real thogh Jay-z id my favourite
I’m listening to “My Own Destiny” on that album right now. What you state is the absolute truth, and so is Ms. Hill! I am patiently waiting on her return.
