As Jay-Z continues to create history (recently appearing on Oprah for the first time) and dominate global charts with Blueprint 3, Australia is buzzing over Jigga’s collaboration with local musician Luke Steele.

Perth-based Steele’s unique vocals feature on the album’s opening track, “What We Are Talking About”.

Although he’s not the typical hip-hop artist we’d normally cover, here’s the low down on who this Down Under mystery man is.

Luke Steele is a member of psychedelic pop duo Empire Of The Sun (named after the 1987 Steven Spielberg-directed film) a group that rose to fame with their debut single “Walking On A Dream” late last year.

Steele is no stranger to the limelight though, having formerly been a part of popular indie rock band The Sleepy Jackson and a member of Perth’s most renowned musical family (his sister also enjoys success as the frontwoman of the band Little Birdy).

So how does a musician from the most isolated city in the world feature with one of the biggest names in hip hop? HBO’s popular series Entourage is the answer.

After hearing Empire Of The Sun’s track “Standing On The Shore” featured on the show, Jay-Z and his team tracked down the singer and asked him to contribute to the track. Unfortunately, Steele was unable to fly to New York for a session and recorded the track in Perth, sending it through within 12 hours from the time he got the life-changing call.

“I was a bit nervous [after Entourage aired], wondering what everyone thought. Jay-Z called me at three in the morning and said he loved it,” Steele recently told MTV.

With Jay-Z’s album breaking records and enjoying success in Australia (it debuted on the ARIA charts at number 9, which is a huge feat for hip-hop music in the region), Steele will now embark on a tour around Australia with Empire Of The Sun as headliners of the Parklife festival (which also features The Cool Kids, Lady Sovereign and DJ A-Trak) kicking off this weekend.
