Get To Know: Playaz Circle
Along with presenting the exciting G-Shock contest pictured above, Playaz Circle is dropping their new album tomorrow, Flight 360: The Takeoff (DTP/Def Jam).
Based in College Park, Tity Boi and Dolla Boi formed Playaz Circle (aka “the Duffle Bag Boys”) in 1997.
The duo hustled to make a living in both legal and illegal ways. The word “Playaz” actually stands for “Preparing Legal Assets for Years A to Z” (A to Z meaning from beginning to end).
After a successful independent album, United We Stand, United We Fall, the next big step in their career was meeting Ludacris.
At one point, he was an opening act for the group. They all became good friends and began working on their music career goals together…
Until the illegal hustles we mentioned interrupted.
Dolla ended up in jail on drug charges for two years, and Tity got shot.
Ludacris reached out after hearing of the unfortunate news, and eventually got Playaz Circle signed to his label, Disturbing Tha Peace.
Supply And Demand was the first album that Dolla and Tity released (DTP/Universal Records). It featured production from the likes of Jazze Pha, Juicy J (of 3-6 Mafia) and many more, as well as the hit “Duffle Bag Boy” with Lil Wayne.
Their upcoming album, Flight 360: The Takeoff, includes the smash singles “Stupid” (Featuring OJ Da Juiceman) and “I Can’t Remember” (Featuring R&B sensation Bobby Valentino).
Kiki got a chance to talk with Tity Boi and Dolla Boi about the early and challenging years of their careers, what to expect from the new album as well as get a feel for their fashion sense!
Check it out:
DrJays.com: Both of you guys got into some trouble as you were on the come up, with Tity getting shot and Dolla incarcerated. What went down, and how did you overcome this roadblock in your career?
Dolla Boi: “Basically, I got caught up in several things all at once. Drug and traffic charges sentenced me to two years. But this whole experience really helped me develop a whole other state of mind and it was then that I realized that rap was what I wanted to do. Rap was my outlet and it pushed me to do better in life. I learned and grew from this experience and it helped me get to where I am today”.
DrJays.com: Tell us about your relationship with Ludacris, from when he was just coming up until now.
Tity Boi: “We first linked up with Ludacris during his time as a radio personality in Atlanta. Luda was a big supporter of me and Dolla’s mixtape we put out. The rest was history. From then on us and Luda have been fam”.
DrJays.com: What can we expect from your new album, Flight 360: The Takeoff?
Tity Boi: “Flight 360: The Takeoff is a real visual album. It’s got a lot of content, which is something rap is missing. Everything is so clubbish and geared only for radio hits. With our new album, you’ll find a lot of issues that we have been through. It’s just a great album and deals with a lot of maturation and growth.
Flight 360 is based on our careers taking off. Me and Dolla are real hyped for this album, we have a gang of dope rappers lined up like Ludaris, Bobby V, Raekwon and Lil’ Wayne. Our single “I Can’t Remember,” with Bobby V is out right now and have been getting great feedback”.
DrJays.com: Who would be your top three artists to collaborate with?
Tity Boi: “John Mayer, Robin Thicke, Prince and Whitney Houston as a bonus! A lot of people think just because we do rap music, we’ll only stick to rap music. But me and Dolla appreciate great music. We’re very versatile and like different genres. We have much respect for all of four of those artists and it would be an honor to get the chance to work with them.”
DrJays.com: When it comes to fashion, would you say that you keep up with trends? Any new looks you will be rocking this fall season?
Tity Boi: We definitely keep up with the trends. Me and Dolla like to think of ourselves as trend setters. You’ll always find us rockin’ the newest and hottest gear. This fall you’ll definitely see us rockin’ boots – Polo, Gucci and Louis Vuitton boots. You’ll also see us wearing all colors and styles of Levi’s 501 jeans – we’re taking it back to the whole Eazy-E look.
Dolla Boi: We’re also real big with the sport look right now too! We’ve been rockin’ the Adidas track suits with the fresh shell toes (a tribute to Run DMC). You’ll also find us wearing the college preppy look – V-necks, Polo sweaters and lots of colors.
Tity Boi: And of course we’ll always have the JEWLERY shinin’!
DrJays.com: What are some of your favorite brands?
TIty Boi: You know we always keep it fresh with Gucci, Polo, Louis Vuitton.
Dolla Boi: Prada, Fendi and Dolce are also our go to brands.
Cop Flight 360: The Takeoff tomorrow, September 29th. Also, tomorrow is the last day to enter the DrJays.com x Playaz Circle x G-Shock contest!
