Today in New York, Lady Gaga was joined by Dr. Dre, Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine and Noel Lee of Monster Cable to officially unveil “Heartbeats by Lady Gaga”, the latest addition to the hugely popular Beats by Dr. Dre headphone family from Monster.

The press conference, held at the swanky New York Palace Hotel in midtown Manhattan, also featured a visual overview of the to-date success of the Beats By Dr. Dre brand plus support from diverse celebrities including Sting, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Ne-Yo, Soulja Boy, Black Eyed Peas, M.I.A. and Jay-Z.

Explaining her motivation behind creating the headphones, Gaga says, “In the deepest hour of the night, I confess to myself three things. I would die if I was forbidden to write, forbidden to love, or forbidden to fashion. Heartbeats embody the trinity of my human being, with one additional vow: that SOUND matters. Wear Heartbeats, love each other and celebrate the art and lifestyle of music.”

“I wish I could force my fans to buy my [upcoming] album with these headphones because of the sound quality” Gaga joked to the media crowd about the aptly-named The Fame: Monster, a re-release of her debut album (with bonus cuts) due in November.

Noel Lee began the conference by rolling on stage on a Segway, explaining the history of Beats By Dr. Dre as “a unique collaboration that had never been done in the history of consumer electronics” and describing the headphones as “an iconic product in not only sound performance, but in fashion and lifestyle.”

“This is not a license; this is not pay for play,” Lee said of his partnership with Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. “This is a unique collaboration between us.”

Lee then introduced Jimmy Iovine to the stage, who enthusiastically described the ethos behind the Beats brand in a colorful vignette.

“The most exciting thing about my job is you get to hear music before anybody else does. One day will.i.am comes to my house, plays me ['Boom Boom Pow'] and says to me, ‘I knew you were gonna ask me to wear Beats in the video, so I wrote a part in the song especially ['I be rockin' them beats'].

“That’s our version of ‘I want my MTV’,” Iovine says with a laugh.

Describing Dr. Dre as “possibly the best producer, both sonically and professionally, ever” Iovine spoke of his longtime friend with great admiration. And candor. “To all those who think Dre lives in the ‘hood, he actually lives in Malibu,” he says laughing. “Interscope is the house Dre built.”

Iovine explains the creative process of the first pair of Beats By Dr. Dre took three years, with acts like Gwen Stefani, Kanye West and Timbaland contributing to the design, concept, sound quality, etc. “No other headphones capture the sound quality of the studio like Beats,” Iovine says.

“Years of work went into the sound – that’s the most important part to me,” says Dr. Dre.

He tells the story behind Lady Gaga’s involvement in the brand: “Jimmy says to me, Dre, we got a little problem. The ladies are complaining that the headphones are messing their hair up. Lady Gaga says she has the perfect idea for a pair and she wants to call them Heartbeats.” And the rest, as they say, is history.

“Working on my re-release album, I’ve been unable to listen to the new tracks unless I use my headphones!” added Gaga. “Especially in the digital era, as music’s being squashed and changed, I think it’s so important to stay true to the music.

“The truth is, you can download a file, but you can’t download a lifestyle. These headphones are a representation of me; the headphones are what I believe my fans would love to wear as part of me.”

Heartbeats by Lady Gaga are currently available for pre-order at BestBuy.com and will be on-sale at all Best Buy stores from October 18. The basic model (not including ControlTalk) is $119.95, the basic model with ControlTalk is $149.95 and the “Haute Couture Ultra High Definition Headphones” will be $179.95.
