Jason Derulo: “I Can Actually Sing, I Don’t Need Auto-Tune!”
Jason Derulo‘s a star in the making. A quadruple threat who writes, sings, dances and acts, the Miami-born artist intends to deliver his infectious brand of crossover music to a global audience.
The 20-year-old talent is the first act signed to Warner Bros. Records’ new joint venture with multi-platinum songwriter and producer J.R. Rotem‘s record label, Beluga Heights. “Jason Derulo is beyond the real deal,” says Rotem. “There’s no limit to what he can accomplish. I think he raises the bar for all new artists.”
As for their artist/producer synergy, Jason says he believes they “have a chemistry like Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones.” Jason’s demeanor, in fact, is very reminiscent of his idol MJ – sweet, sensitive and inherently musical.
Encouraged by the success of his debut single “Whatcha Say” (currently at #5 on Billboard’s Hot 100, #2 on iTunes’ Top Songs and the fourth most streamed song on MySpace), Jason gathered a group of media types at the Warner Bros’ offices in New York recently to preview more tracks from his upcoming, as yet untitled album (due early 2010).

Jason spoke on how he’s “been in the studio, truckin’ away” for the past eight months, having recorded over 300 songs. “Every song I wrote myself, with the exception of one.”
Tracks like “Whatcha Say” (originally written for Rotem’s first success story, Sean Kingston), the very catchy “Around The World” and “Riding Solo” (inspired by a break-up described by Jason as “the singles anthem” featuring an interpolation of “Bittersweet Symphony”) are testament to the broad appeal of Jason’s sound. “I want my music to transcend and reach as many people as possible,” he says.
An acoustic version of “Whatcha Say” is set for release to radio and iTunes soon. According to Jason, “I wanted to show the world I can actually sing, that I don’t need auto-tune!”
He’s also set to star as himself in Turn The Beat Around, a MTV dance film due for release in January 2010.
Check out Jason on MySpace and watch him perform “Whatcha Say” at Wango Tango in LA:

It’s very true that Jason has a great voice. I’ve listened to clips of him perform & sing live, and the instrument is strong, full, and extremely well-trained. Let’s remember that in this day & age, Auto-Tune & pitch correction are used for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is to create a more synthesized or “electronic” effect for certain song themes. “Watcha Say” is doing exactly that, but don’t let it fool you. The boy can SANG!
