Soulja Boy

Unfortunately, there’s a new name to add to the list of rappers with legal troubles. Teenage rap sensation Soulja Boy was arrested yesterday and is out on bail. Find out why after the jump.

Charged with obstruction of justice, the rapper – whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way – allegedly fled from police during an investigation of a gathering at an abandoned house in Stockbridge, Georgia. Police decided to investigate the gathering after numerous complaints of a disturbance and found about 40 people there.

As the story goes, about half of the people at the gathering fled upon the arrival of the police. Soulja Boy later returned and told police that the group had assembled there to shoot a music video. Following his discussion with the police, he was arrested.

According to HipHopDX, counterfeit money and a handgun were among the things seized from the property.

Interestingly enough, Soulja Boy’s arrest comes during the same week of Method Man‘s surrender and subsequent arrest for failing to pay taxes as well as the scheduled release of Shyne – a release which has not yet been fully completed because of legal matters concerning his immigration status. Also, the circumstances of this arrest seem slightly similar to the recent sentencing of Lil’ Boosie to two years’ imprisonment for drug and gun charges.

Unlike other genres of music, arrests seem to boost the careers of the rappers involved (case in point: Lil’ Kim‘s highly rated album and reality show leading up to her prison sentence).

What do you think? Why does hip hop (both the music and the corresponding culture) always seem to inevitably clash with the law?

Unfortunately that’s just the thing to do to get credit. Rap has changed a lot from telling a real story to telling fairy tails. There are some bad cops around, but there’s something to be said when your rapping lyrics about fuck the man, I slang this, i’m a goon, thug, blood, crip, mogwie, kill that etc and/or your just doing ignorant ish.

For the love of baby jesus if you know your in an area/field that’s not liked by cops/law/gov etc, then keep your shit clean because your going to be looked at the most. Stop fishing for trouble then complaining when you catch a case.

  • “For the love of Baby Jesus,” huh? Is that a Ricky Bobby-inspired moment?

  • chelenna says:

That’s messed up yo.I feel that police target young successfull artist because of jealousy and they need 2 get over it.

  • Truth says:

First of all Rick, you’re right! Hip-hop artists are always talking about the “hip-hop police” and how they apparently are being targeted by this supposed group of law enforcement officials and then you have idiot’s like Soulja Toy, who put themselves in situations where they end up getting arrested!

Name me 5 popular artists in hip-hop today who haven’t had any run in’s with the law!

And do I have to bring up the fact that Soulja toy got robbed at gun point and tried to lie about it? So we all know that he’s not slangin this, or a blood, or a crip. If you portray yourself to be something that you’re not, someone is going to try you and see what you’re really about.

This is a prime example of how we don’t want society to view hip hop culture especially in the black community, it just gives them another reason to throw hip hop music and it’s artists under the bus!

  • Howdy this is somewhat of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to
get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
