Soulja Boy Gets Arrested
Unfortunately, there’s a new name to add to the list of rappers with legal troubles. Teenage rap sensation Soulja Boy was arrested yesterday and is out on bail. Find out why after the jump.
Charged with obstruction of justice, the rapper – whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way – allegedly fled from police during an investigation of a gathering at an abandoned house in Stockbridge, Georgia. Police decided to investigate the gathering after numerous complaints of a disturbance and found about 40 people there.
As the story goes, about half of the people at the gathering fled upon the arrival of the police. Soulja Boy later returned and told police that the group had assembled there to shoot a music video. Following his discussion with the police, he was arrested.
According to HipHopDX, counterfeit money and a handgun were among the things seized from the property.
Interestingly enough, Soulja Boy’s arrest comes during the same week of Method Man‘s surrender and subsequent arrest for failing to pay taxes as well as the scheduled release of Shyne – a release which has not yet been fully completed because of legal matters concerning his immigration status. Also, the circumstances of this arrest seem slightly similar to the recent sentencing of Lil’ Boosie to two years’ imprisonment for drug and gun charges.
Unlike other genres of music, arrests seem to boost the careers of the rappers involved (case in point: Lil’ Kim‘s highly rated album and reality show leading up to her prison sentence).
What do you think? Why does hip hop (both the music and the corresponding culture) always seem to inevitably clash with the law?
