Why You Should See Good Hair

Chris Rock’s Good Hair in Theaters Now!
Good Hair is a documentary comedy film that Chris Rock premiered on October 9, 2009. The movie targets on African American hair and the whole culture behind it. Chris was prompted to make this film when his daughter, Lola, asked him “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” The light bulb when off in his head and he began his journey on what makes good hair.
Last week I entered the movie theater not expecting to gain anything from this movie. What was there to learn about African American hair? I’m black, I have a sister, mother, and countless number of female friends. I thought I was an expert. As I walked into the theater the demographic was overwhelming. I was one of the few black males present. A group of white folks sat together. The majority was black females ranging from 18-65. I was in for a ride.
Good Hair, in my opinion, is one of the best documentaries this year. Chris Rock does his best to educate his audience while still making us laugh. The film touches on many topics such as the $9 billion black hair industry, the chemical relaxers, weaves, and he even manages to take a trip to India, where most of the weaves are from that are on females’ heads. What makes the film even more entertaining is that we are able to watch an open dialogue on good hair that takes place in barbershops, hair salons, and the hair convention in Atlanta. We are also introduced to on celebrity’s thoughts and own experiences in the 1-on-1 sessions with Chris Rock. Some of these celebrity figures include Maya Angelou, Eve, Melyssa Ford, Meagan Good, Andre Harrell, Ice T, KRS-One, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Rave-Symone, Al Sharpton and more. The interviews are shown in pieces throughout the film.

The film tries to capture the social and economical impacts of achieving this status of good hair, mostly as it pertains to black females. As a black male, which sits outside of the demographic of this movie, I learned a helluva lot about this hair culture. Who would imagine natural hair would be considered “uneducated” by a future employer. It is a movie that ignites conversation following the movie. It doesn’t just start and end at the movie theater. You become a lot more sensitive and understanding of black women in today’s society. So if you’re thinking that “Oh I already have good hair” or “that movie doesn’t mean anything to me” then please second guess that notion. Make sure you see the movie and I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Saw Chris Rock last winter. He’s mad funny. Mario Joyner opened for him – he’s even funnier. Not surprising that Chris Rock would produce an insightful movie.
I didn’t know the movie was out yet but now that it is I’m definitely going to the movie theatre this weekend.
I saw this at a pre-screening and I was a bit disappointed. My friend who went with me said I shouldn’t be.
We both have locs and I said the movie should’ve delved more into the fact that the natural hair industry, which you can really call good hair, is BOOMING. People are spending THOUSANDS of dollars to get their loc’d and for maintenance.
I’m lucky enough to know how to do my own hair but I felt the movie just re-established the fact that relaxed hair and weave are STILL the norm for what good hair is- and I beg to differ.
Especially in the scene with the girls at santa monica high school- the chicks were like ‘we think your hair is cute and all but….’ *smh*
but I guess the movie isn’t for us nappy headed folks who have hair that touches the middle of our back without extensions and no more product than them good juices and berries.
Funny stuff..I wanna see it just off of the name..I know its going to be hysterical..:)
I loved the movie C Rock is the man. I also liked the song that plays at the beginning of the movie. Anyone have an idea which artist made the song. peace
