I was having a conversation with a friend last night while watching Keanu Reeve’s Constantine-esque cop film, otherwise known as Street Kings and somehow BET crept into the conversation. An interesting question came out of that convo and I wanted to know what you guys think? I’ll ask that after the jump.

“Would you watch BET in HD?”

There was a rumor going around that DISH Network and DirectTV were going to be joining up with Debra Lee and BET to bring “Black Star Power” into the 21st Century.

An employee of DISH gives his take on the situation below:

“As a employee of DISH network and subscriber, I was watching a program called Charlie Chat which gives DISH subscribers the opportunity to talk to our company founder CEO Charlie Ergen about what’s happening with the company, etc, etc….. He was discussing about DISH adding more networks who will be broadcasting programs in HD and within the first of 4 slide presentation of this segment BET logo was shown as one of many networks available in HD. This means the next BET awards will be broadcast in HD (as a DISH HD customer) and this is great news.

I can not speak for Direct TV customers or other cable providers (comcast, cox, etc….) BUT to say “BET HD” as a nice ring to it. Word up Ms. Lee, Reg and S. Hill.”

When my homegirl had brought that up, I immediately began to wonder what shows would get the HD treatment. 106 & Park wouldn’t work because the colors would eff up those who suffer from epilepsy. College Hill and Baldwin Hillz wouldn’t work because no one in the “age of Obama” wants to see black folks who don’t study on TV anymore. So, I put together these three shows that would help usher BET into the HD era:

American Gangster:

Already a classic on TV and a hit in the streets, BET can up the ante by making the hood tales of America’s most wanted come to life in full 1080i. Although the show wouldn’t be as graphic as say that Bloods & Crips documentary, but realism would definitely be the word to describe American Gangster’s new swagger.

Rap City:

Off jump, you bring back Big Tigger, because frankly son was out-rapping some of the rappers. I wanna see him and these new cats go a few rounds on the mic [pause]. Mixed some HD with some nicely placed beats and you can maybe begin to push some real music stuff on BET. It’s either that or we begin to make those pitches for those new TV shows I was talking about back in April.

BET Uncut:

Besides the fact that Uncut was the reason why folks stayed up till 3 in the morning to watch BET, it was cool to see rappers that weren’t on Top 40 or Billboard get some shine. Joker The Bailbondsman, Black Jesus, even my homeboy Casey Gane-McCalla got some love in the streets during Uncut’s reign on late night. My reason to bring it back… to see Rosa Acosta in high definition.

What shows would you bring back if BET decided to go all HDTV-ish? Speak on it in the comments section below!
