In 2008, Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Wayne had one of the more historic years in the history of hip-hop.

In addition to being featured on more than 50 of the year’s biggest singles and remixes, Wayne set the industry on fire with “A Milli” before shocking the world by domestically selling more than 1 million units of The Carter III in its first week.

For several months leading up to the release of the album and two to three months thereafter, producer Quincy Jones III and crew followed Wayne with cameras in tow to create what would become an extremely intimate film.

Aptly titled The Carter, the production captures the rapper in a number of truly candid moments. It also features direct insight as well as conversations with such people as Birdman, manager Cortez Bryant, and even Wayne’s daughter Reginae Carter.

More than the typical documentary, The Carter offers a rarely seen, raw look into the thoughts and world of an extremely complicated man. So thorough in fact is the project that earlier this year Mr. Carter brought about a lawsuit attempting to have its release blocked. Reports suggested that after viewing the final cut, Wayne and his manager were unhappy with certain material, calling it a “scandalous portrayal” of the artist.

Needless to say, QD3 Entertainment was eventually cleared for distribution, leading to today’s straight-to-DVD release. Directed by Adam Bhala Lough, The Carter is now available at retailers nationwide.
