How Much Do Haters Influence Your Personal Style?

How much influence do your haters have on what you will or won’t be seen in?

With more and more pics of celebrities at their worst hitting the internet, it seems a little nerve-wracking that what looks good in the mirror at home might make you a laughingstock out in the streets. In fact, even if you’re looking your best, you’re still bound to catch some flak from someone.

Find out more about haters and style after the jump.Rappers certainly have a lot to say about their haters. Case in point:

“Laced in Macy’s don’t have it,
a hatred addict.
I need mad faces and frowns when I’m around,
or I wasted fabric.” – Nas, “Make The World Go Round” from Untitled

Kanye West also spoke on the issue in his song “Paranoid” from 808s and Hearbreak:

“Yeah, you see ‘em look
baby let ‘em look
Give you cold looks
cuz we look cold.”

We can’t forget about Katt Williams and his “luxurious” hair:

Even gospel singer Canton Jones has a song especially for his haters as well.

I wonder how much our distaste for the words and behavior of haters influences us, especially when it comes to personal style.

Do we tend to play it safe when picking the day’s outfit trying to anticipate and avoid the hate?

Do we instead take Nas’s approach (as quoted above) and pick something just to make the haters spiteful?

While we’re at it, is everyone who comments on your fashion choices a hater? I get plenty of unwanted fashion advice on “off” days, and most of these “experts” swear that they are only trying to help.

At the end of the day, what’s most important is as follows:

  1. That you have clothes on (typically this is a required societal norm)
  2. That you are comfortable (regardless of the thoughts of anyone else, the way you feel in your clothes is the key)
  3. That you make whatever statement you would like to make about yourself in them. Period.

If you take care of those three, let the chips fall where they may. Be sure to realize, however, that fashion is a form of social interaction and that people will comment in negative or positive ways depending upon your style and their tastes.

Here are a few items you can for those days when you want to address your haters directly.

I really appreciate your comment. I’m a little out of my element actually writing about fashion/style, but DrJays is a clothing retailer after all so I felt the need to try it out.

I got haters but I don’t really pay them mind. People are going to hate you for one reason or another. If it’s not that reason it’s another.
