Last night the American Music Awards 2009 brought out music’s finest from yesterday to today. Acts ranged from Jay-Z and Alicia Keys to Whitney Houston to Shakira to Jennifer Lopez and more.

The red carpet saw various celebrities rocking mostly black outfits, with splashes of color thrown in for good measure.

Paula Abdul shined in this black mermaid gown

Ne-Yo hit the red carpet looking dapper as usual, with his signature hat and blazer combination

Rihanna looked amazing in a gorgeous black and white dress, white heels (usually a no-no), simple jewelry and blonde hair (we prefer it dark)

Stunning Sofia Vergara chose a classic gown and simple make-up for the red carpet

Shakira looked cute in a bright yellow mini-dress (but perhaps not the best choice for her winter skin)

Leona Lewis still managed to give us “good girl” in a black bustier leather mini-dress and chained ankle boots

Not a huge fan of Toni Braxton‘s look; the dress is too young for her

Snoop Dogg brought wife Shante with him; both hit the carpet in matching “all-black everything”

Fergie is finally starting to look age-appropriate in this jeweled gown

Alicia Keys looked beautiful in a royal blue, cinched mini-dress, matching stilettos and diamond stud earrings
