The first time I listened to Joell Ortiz was back when he released Bodega Chronicles and the song “Hip Hop” was a constant feature on my iTunes play-list. He started out with “Yo do me a favor, accidentally step on your white sun glasses, we don’t wear those over here this is Hip Hop” He grabbed my attention and brought back lyricism, punchlines, and story telling. Some of the best rappers that have graced the mic have excelled in all those traits. Well this week Joell gave us his latest mixtape before his album, The Free Agent, that comes out in 2010.

Hopefully we are all aware of the story line of Joell’s rap career. He spent some time at Aftermath Records in which he wrote for Dr. Dre and most likely took it as a life lesson as he was alongside 50 Cent and Eminem. After he parted ways he got together with Joe Budden, Crooked I, and Royce Da 5’9″ to form Slaughterhouse.

Today I bring the mixtape which is a must have in the iTunes or whatever software you use. It’s basically Joell smashing beats left and right like he was Muhammad Ali in the boxing ring. There are punchlines, story telling, and incredible lyricism. You even get the feeling that he just loves rapping and providing great music for his fans and for the state of Hip Hop. I’ll share 3 songs with you before you make that crucial decision to download.
