Kid Cudi Hip Hop Album Of The Year Drjays.com

Kid Cudi received a somewhat coveted title from Entertainment Weekly - Best Hip Hop Album of 2009.

Can you think of anyone who may have deserved it more?

Truth be told I haven’t listened to all of Kid Cudi‘s debut album Man On The Moon. The two songs I have heard are decent enough Super Boo and Day ‘N’ Nite. I can listen to Super Boo on repeat but I can’t even finish listening to Day ‘N’ Nite- maybe the Crookers remix.

Nevertheless since this news broke, a virtual war has broken out on hip hop forums all over the web between fans and dissenters.

Some people against Kid Cudi being named hip hop album of the year said:

EW must be smokin that OOOWEEEE. Rae [kwon]…Mos…hell, Wale for that matter, all put out dope joints this year. not to mention countless others. i’m a Cudi fan, but that joint wasn’t the “Hip-Hop” LP of the year by any means…”

“it’s entertainment weekly, cmon yall. Who cares?”

“i really like the ablum, BUT…dude cannot rap. his lyrics are weak as sh*t. its a very entertaining album, the production is great, and a lot of the songs are pretty catchy but if you pay close attention to the lyrics its just bad.” In reply to this statement:
“i didnt even have to pay close attention…the lyrics were so bad and you have to get past terrible singing to hear them so its not like there’s an upside to tuning the words out.”

“the best of the year OBFCL2 (Raekwon) sh*t all over jay’s album. The clipse had a better album and gucci mane damn near had a better album then jay. Cudi’s sh*t was dope as hell bet def not album of the year.”

But not to be outdone, Kid Cudi‘s fans are up in arms and totally back EW‘s choice:

“Finally, my favourite album of the year gets some recognition. I loved OBFCL2 as well, but Cudi totally dominated in creativity, in my opinion.”

“definitely my favorite hip hop album of the year”

“LOL @ [Yall] MAD ASS. that ALBUM was outstanding. I don’t care about that n*gga, really. Don’t care if he wear skinny jeans. Don’t care what colors he wear. Don’t care how nice he is. I DO KNOW that when you PUT THE ALBUM IN AND PRESS PLAY the shit that plays is OUTSTANDING. You n*ggas are so caught up in yourselves that you don’t even bother listening anymore. Next y’all n*ggas gonna tell me that Sean Price or Blu and Exile or some irrelevant ass niggas like that had better albums <—NNNNNOOOOOPPPEEEEEEE

Cudi‘s shit KNOCKED. And you are HEATED that the mainstream world caught on, while you mad, unsuccessful wannabe artists DIDN’T”

Tell ‘em why you mad right?

According to XXL:

Weeks after being nominated for three Grammy Awards, Entertainment Weekly has named The Man on the Moon: The End of Day, Kid Cudi’s concept-driven Universal debut, the best Hip-Hop Album of 2009. Led by the breakout hit, “Day ’N’ Night,” the dark, concept album sold an impressive 103,900 copies in its first week on shelves. EW also named the G.O.O.D. music artist as one of the five “Breakout Stars”of the year.

So the important question remains, does Kid Cudi deserve this? Is this another tale of hype? I for one definitely liked Wale‘s album and wouldn’t have minded seeing it grab this award.
