Tyler Perry To Return To The Stage After Five Years

Submitted by on December 30, 2009 – 11:38 pmOne Comment

It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since entertainment extraordinaire Tyler Perry graced the stage in the role which made him famous. Starting very early next year, Perry is ready to go back to the live audience performances that jump started his career.

After taking the last part of 2009 to care for his mother during her last days. Ending the year on such a tragic note gives Perry a new incentive to take the stage: it’s his therapy. He’s not wasting any time, planning to hit the road on Jan. 4th for Madea’s Big Happy Family.

The play will be Perry’s twelfth and, of course, will feature him in his infamous role of Mabel “Madea” Simmons. On his blog, he describes the play as his ‘biggest and best ever.’ He is confident that it will be hilariously funny and even innovative, stating that he has done things in this show which have never been done onstage before. It’s set to run from January until May of next year.

Here’s more of what the prolific Perry had to say about his new masterpiece.

“Anyway, I am so glad I have decided to go out on tour.  You can’t imagine how much I need to be in front of the people right now. To get that give-and-take, I am so looking forward to it.  Can you believe it’s been 5 years since I’ve toured? So I’m coming to make you hurt yourself in a good way…LOL.  MADEA’s BIG HAPPY FAMILY is my new play. Trust me when I tell you, I need to laugh and make you laugh even harder.  All I want to say is that if you have not seen “MADEA” live on stage you haven’t seen Madea at all.  In the movies, I’m limited but on stage….FREEEEDDOMMMM!!! LOL.”

He has released dates for the first leg of the tour, and they are as follows.

Jan 04th, ….El Paso, TX….Don Haskins Center
Jan 05th, ….Phoenix, AZ….Dodge Theatre
Jan 06th, ….San Diego, CA….Sports Arena
Jan 09th, ….Seattle, WA….Key Arena
Jan 10th, ….Portland, OR….Memorial Coliseum

If I know Tyler Perry, this ‘happy family’ will be anything but. Of course, I’m sure all will be worked out by the conclusion of the play.

Should Tyler Perry work his way through his pain or is it too soon? Will you be going to see his play? Let me know in the comments section.
