A Look Ahead To 2010: News Edition

Now that we’ve got music out of the way, I had to hit you with a few predictions of some events that may occur in 2010. I can just see these things coming, I tell you. Find out how it’s going down in 2010 after the jump.

More Trouble for Tiger?

Tiger Woods and family

As far as the Chinese zodiac scheme is concerned, (most of) 2010 is the Year of the Tiger. While that may be true, it may not help Tiger Woods very much. Amid losing a few sponsors, reportedly renegotiating a pre-nup, and possibly facing a divorce, he has taken an indefinite sabbatical of the sport which made him a global living legend and gave him a big head in more ways than one.

We may not have heard the last from his former mistresses, and with every public statement (or lack thereof) will be more scrutiny for Woods and his entire family. While I certainly think Tiger can come back from this highly publicized personal fall, I also think the storm is still beginning for him.

Death of iPhone?

While I don’t mean this literally, I think 2010 will see a new cellular, must-have, multifunctional device take the top spot. I would never underestimate the minds behind Google, and they are gunning for the mobile market with Android. Android, for those who don’t know, is an operating system for mobile phones that was created by Google. I expect one of the phones that uses Android, such as the HTC Hero (pictured below), to dethrone the iPhone.

Look for Android-enabled phones, such as this HTC Hero, to challenge the iPhone.

The Boondocks is Back!

Can you believe it’s been over a year since an original episode of The Boondocks has aired? A lot has happened since then, so I’m sure the writers will have plenty of material, such as

  • the election of Barack Obama to the office of President of the United States
  • the death of Michael Jackson
  • Kanye West‘s VMA rant (can’t you just hear Uncle Ruckus now?)
  • the Tiger Woods scandal
  • Michael Vick‘s comeback
  • Plaxico Burress‘s arrest

and that’s just to name a few. I read somewhere that they were supposed to do a show that basically amounted to a spoof of Hustle and Flow and would feature Terrence Howard and Kanye West, among others. That was supposed to happen for Season 2, but nothing ever came of it.

New episodes are set to be released in early 2010. No dates yet, but I’m about ready to download them on iTunes for the third time in a row.

NBA Finals Showdown

LeBron James and Kobe Bryant

The NBA and Nike did a good job of hyping up what was sure to be the match-up of the decade for last year’s playoffs. There were Muppets, Vitamin Water commercials, etc. All that hype and the Cavs fell short of their goal, losing in five to the Orlando Magic.

With the Cavaliers and the Lakers off to great starts, the stars seem just about ready to align for these two basketball titans to finally meet on the hallowed hardwood. It’s a long way to the Finals, but if these two can keep things the way they’re going, it is very possible.

Of course, if they were to both make it this year, the plot would thicken. Ex-Laker Shaquille O’Neal would be going up against his former team and the man with whom he made a historic one-two punch. Shaq and LeBron vs. Kobe. Sounds like the biggest ticket in town to me.

The Karate Kid Remake

Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith on the set of The Karate Kid

More than two decades after the original, 2010 will mark the release of a remake of the classic film, The Karate Kid. Produced by Hollywood heavyweight Will Smith, the film will star his son Jaden as the lead character. Jackie Chan will co-star as Smith’s Mr. Miyagi-esque character.

The film seems to be capable of making young Jaden a star, and with his father at the helm, he’s a shoe-in. Shot on location in China, the film’s official release date is June 11.

Look out for high-flying kicks and other devastating blows when the film debuts. Like father, like son? We’ll see. Until then, check out the trailer:

Iron Man 2

Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and Mickey Rourke on the cover of Entertainment Weekly

I predict that this will be the highest-grossing film of 2010 (or at least one of the top five). With a star-studded (and controversially-revamped) cast, new villains, machines, and special effects, I don’t see why it wouldn’t.

The first film grossed nearly $600 million. I’m expecting this one to do even better, just off the strength of the promotion and trailers. Speaking of trailers, here’s one:

The trailer has nearly 3 million views on YouTube already. By the release date of May 7, the buzz should be at a fever pitch. Also, in addition to being a Marvel Comic creation, Iron Man 2 will feature G4 television personality Olivia Munn. That basically means that the nerds will come out in droves for this one.

President Obama’s Ambition To Pay Off?

President Barack Obama

With a historic and sweeping health care reform bill passing the Senate just before the end of ’09, our president stands in position to carry out a lot more of his campaign promises. With signs of a slowdown in the recession and quite a hefty agenda, I’m anxious to see what can now be done with environment protection legislation as well as with education reform.

I predict that the president, who has taken a hit in approval ratings and attracted quite a few naysayers during his first year in office, will silence many of his critics as long as remains consensus-based and open-minded. I also expect international opinion of America to drastically improve over the course of his term, as it already has begun to.

But my most important prediction for 2010 is…
