Conan, Letterman And Kimmel Ether Jay Leno And NBC
If you thought Prodigy dressed as a ballerina was one of the great all-time etherings (we’ll look past the fact he wasn’t even in a ballerina outfit in the pictures, but it did make for a hot line), you obviously haven’t been following what’s been going on in late night television lately. In a show of support towards Conan O’Brien and his treatment by the execs at NBC, other late night hosts have publicly come out swinging at both NBC and ex-”Tonight Show” host Jay Leno.
The two most prolific dart throwers were David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel went the extra mile, and did his entire show AS Jay Leno, complete with gray wig, extended chin and slight lisp, while peppering his monologue with Leno-isms. He also constantly chatted with his band leader and after one joke bombed (on purpose), he said – in character as Leno – “you know, on my show everyone applauds after every joke”.
Letterman also went in on Leno. He showed the intro to a new (fake) television show that NBC had created, “Law and Order: Leno Victims Unit”, where the victims are talk show hosts who have their shows taken over by Jay Leno (who he constantly refers to as “Big Jaw” Leno). He also mocks Leno’s voice and love of cars endlessly, even bringing Leno’s wife into the gags.
Of course, Conan had plenty to say, but his shots were more at NBC than Leno himself, although he did suffer some collateral damage. Conan even brought one of his writers (Deon Cole) out to help explain the situation, where he compared NBC to a pimp and Conan, Leno, Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daly to hoes (in case you were wondering, Leno is the bottom ho, Conan is the pretty ho, Jimmy Fallon is the young ho and Carson Daly is the freak ho).
Conan also brought out Howie Mandel to help him decide his next move, “Deal or No Deal” style, with six different cases containing six different options for Conan’s future. The cases revealed options such as “move to Fox but Seth McFarlane does my voice” and “join cast of next ‘Twighlight’ movie as rare albino werewolf”. And what was in the case Conan selected? “2 tickets to see Jay Leno perform stand-up at the Luxor Casino in Las Vegas”.
