This Weekend: CIAA Basketball Tournament
Charlotte, North Carolina is a hot spot this weekend thanks to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament.
The CIAA is a college athletic conference made up of historically Black colleges (HBCU’s) plus one non-HBCU (Chowan University) in the Eastern US (Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina). Conference teams participate in the NCAA’s Division II. It’s one of the largest basketball tournaments in the country.
Founded on the campus of Hampton University in 1912, the CIAA is the oldest African-American athletic conference in the United States. Long before the civil rights initiatives of the ‘60s and the affirmative action activity of the ‘80s and ‘90s, the CIAA provided America with some of its most legendary sports personalities. Today, the conference and its member institutions continue to provide opportunities for every generation.
From the Ford Fan Experience to McDonalds’ Super Saturday to the major step show contest hosted by 106 & Park‘s Terrence J and more, the CIAA tournament is the place to be from now till Saturday.
