BHM Fashion Tribute: Michael Jackson
There will simply be no other like our “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson.
His reign goes on, and will surely keep rippling throughout years to come in music, dance and fashion.
Michael’s first spot in the limelight was alongside his brothers in the Jackson 5 group in the 60s. Starting off in the background, playing congas and tambourine, it was soon evident that Michael was made to lead.
He came out with his afro, bell bottoms, polyester pants – just your typical groovy 70s kid.
What Michael’s style became in the 80s and 90s is still being felt today. While his costumes may have seemed peculiar or even outrageous at times, inspiration was drawn in one way or another.
You see it everywhere from runways to the wardrobes of today’s stars like Chris Brown, Rihanna, Kanye West and more – the ornate military jackets, the flashy fabrics, sequins and the retro 80s leather jackets.
L.A. based costume designers Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins designed most of Jackson’s personal and concert tour wardrobes – tens of thousands of pieces, working from a “Michael” mannequin in their studio that was built to the singer’s exact measurements. Michael’s goal was always to be a step above and beyond current trends. “This is what the world’s wearing — top it,” said the designers of his direction.
Michael’s signature looks included the single white glove, the heavily embellished military jackets, skinny ties, aviator glasses, red leather, the black pegged pants with white ankle socks and black loafers.
It was his own infusion of menswear, heavy metal, and royalty.
