Exclusive: AKOO Speaks On Billboard Controversy
Earlier today the media (both urban and mainstream) was abuzz with news that a promotional billboard for the AKOO clothing brand (of which DrJays.com is the exclusive online retailer) had caused a stir within the Newark, New Jersey community where it is located (corner of Market and Washington Streets, to be exact).
ABC’s Eyewitness News did the following report:
The city’s mayor, Cory Booker, made the following statement as part of the report:
“So often when I am out in the community I see kids wearing their pants too low and others using inappropriate language in public.
I will work with my city council to see if we can address it so we don’t see these types of advertisements displayed in our city in the near future.”
Newark’s City Council President Mildred Crump was also quoted as saying, “I’m so sick of people seeing Newark as a place where they can do whatever they want. They think they can put it in a Black community and nobody is going to say or do anything.”
Here is the exclusive official statement from AKOO in response to the controversy:
“The AKOO brand has always aimed to inspire individualism and creativity. Our advertising campaign was not created to offend or insult anyone but to simply provoke dialogue and thought regarding male/female sexuality within urban culture.
We hope that as more of the campaign is debuted, people will see the multifaceted personality of AKOO.”

People need to stop being so judgemental and/or hypocritical. I was born in Newark, (raised in Orange and East Orange… Bricks whaddup!)and when I was coming up (late 80s, early 90s) all I remember seeing were advertisements for liquor… namely malt liquor. All over Essex County. You wouldn’t see them out in Union, Passaic, Bergen or Morris, though. You wouldn’t find liquor stores on every other corner either. Look, I’m just saying that when I happen to glance up I’d rather see that “racy” billboard than one with a 40 oz, bottle of Patron or Grey goose on it. Community servants, activists and watchdog groups can do me a favor and ask why foreigners ie, Asians, Europeans, and Middle Easterners are awarded funding to open businesses in the areas in which we live. Businesses such as run-down convenience stores, “chicken shacks” and especially liquor stores)which in essence sell us poison. Of all the things to make a fuss about, one would think it would have been made about something worthwhile.
