Is Samuel L. Jackson A Hater?

Much applause and congratulations are in order for actress, comedian, talk show host and now Academy Award winner, Mo’Nique for her supporting role in the film, Precious. But some might disagree with the praise the actress is due.

Mo’Nique joins the likes of Hattie McDaniel, the first Black woman to win an Academy Award, Whoopi Goldberg, and Jennifer Hudson; making her the fourth Black woman in the Academy’s 82-year-old history to be bestowed the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Halle Berry is the first and only Black woman to receive an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, for her role in 2001’s Monster’s Ball.

After a heartfelt acceptance speech, where she rightfully thanked the late Hattie McDaniel, Oprah, Tyler Perry, the entire cast of Precious (which includes the young starlet Gabourey Sidibe, historically the youngest Black actress to be nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role), the crowd excitedly applauded-many appearing happy for the actress.

But a camera panned upon actor, Samuel L. Jackson displaying what appeared to be a very displeased facial expression. Some might say he was giving Mo’Nique the side eye, others would even say the actor was rolling his eyes at the actress and her win.

Is Samuel L. Jackson a hater? You be the judge.

Check out Mo’Nique’s acceptance speech and Jackson’s bizarre expression at the 1:48 mark here:

From what I saw, Samuel noticed the camera was on him and simply pulled a funny face. I don’t think it was directed at Mo’nique at all and people are buggin’. But I guess we’ll see what he says…

  • That’s what it looks like to me as well Boss Lady. I’ve seen this mentioned on other blogs, and I’m not surprised that people would try to turn it into something it isn’t.

  • ThatGuy says:

I see Boss Lady and Thoughts of Frost are very naive. Exactly what camera was he making a funny face to, because there wasn’t one near him and why would he even do something like that after someone just made a serious speech for a serious award. He didn’t know that camera was on him and obviously f’d up real big. But I think I know why he did it and I absolutely agree with him.

I think Sam got caught hating on Monique for trying to be so deep and serious. His expression to me was like oh good another overly emotional sister whining about her struggles to make it. I understand what she was saying, and I think he does too, but he just got caught on camera rolling his eyes as if he were thinking,”Ah hell it’s not that serious!”

  • Blknmild says:

Of course he was hating, I mean look at all the work he has done and have not a single oscar to show for it. He was hating on Monique because she hasnt been acting as long as he has but she won an oscar. Remember what he said about rappers turned actors, He said they just put “butts in the seats”.

Why are people so quick jump to coclusions? I don’t think Samuel L was hating..It looks more like whoever was sitting next to Samuel L Jackson might have said something and the camera happen to catch Samuel L Jacksons reaction to what that person said. ThatGuy you are naive to just outright say he f**** up real big. The camera caught his facial expression but did not pick up anything to the right of that, which is where his eyes were directed at the time of the shot. The only way to find out is to ask him. Everybody and their 2 cent opinions………..

  • Obviously Thatguy isn’t very educated…

There are thousands of cameras at these events. He spotted one monitor that showed his face on another monitor and pulled a face at the camera he was looking at.

It’s really not that difficult to comprehend…
