Should “The Obama Death Tweeter” Be Punished?
After last night’s health-care vote, a young man by the name of Jay Martin cursed out President Obama via Twitter, stating that he “should be assassinated.”
When fellow tweeters responded to his angry messages, he wrote back “Dead fu**ing serious. Unfollow me if you feel otherwise.”
Check out some of the screen shots below:
Gawker.com caught up with who they referred to as “The Obama Death Tweeter” to get to the bottom of this:
GAWKER: Why were you tweeting death threats against Obama tonight?MARTIN: Eh.. I have no excuse for that. I don’t really wish death on him or anyone else
I was just being irrational and speaking on raw emotion But there’s no EXCUSE..I did it.. and yea.GAWKER: So when you said you were “dead serious” about wanting Obama dead what did you mean? Were you joking?
MARTIN: No.. I wasn’t joking. Thats not something you joke about. Again.. I was highly upset and speaking out of anger. I did not mean what I said though.
GAWKER: What about the legal aspect?
MARTIN: As far as the FBI? I don’t really care about them. I said what I said.. And if they take action then so be it.
GAWKER: Were you aware of how serious what you were doing could be? You’re not worried at all about the fact that you could be facing jail time?
MARTIN: No I am Not. And I did not think about consequences. Again..I was speaking out of anger and acted irrationally. Had I been in a rational mind set.. I would not have said it
GAWKER: So do you regret saying it?
MARTIN: Yes. But not because he’s the president.. and not because Of possible jail time. As I said . I don’t wish death on anyone. So yes. I regret threatening another person to that extreme… If I could take it back. I would. But i can’t. So I’m willing to face whatever comes next.
GAWKER: So you were speaking out of anger. What prompted your anger I’m guessing the health care vote?
MARTIN: Yes. And my beliefs on it from what I have researched.
GAWKER: Would you consider yourself a Conservative?
MARTIN: I’m not political. I don’t believe our Government has its citizen’s best interest in mind whether Democrat or Republican.
GAWKER: OK, so that’s why you’re against the health care bill.
MARTIN: Basically yes.
According to his Facebook page, Jay Martin graduated from Vatterott College last year with an IT degree and currently resides in Federal Way, WA. His “About Me” page says: “Socially aware, Deep Thinker, Artistic, Hip Hop Aficionado, Free Thinker, Funny Guy.”
Do you think he should be punished for making these statements?

If he were to be punished it would take away his freedom of speech don’t you think? Can’t control everyone’s mouth and what they say, that’s just people, can’t throw someone in jail for speaking how they feel.
little pu%k ass bit#h.go back to school,i know things are rough with you having to use lawn chairs in your living room, but relax young 1,stop being so salty!
he should be punished for that lot 29 hoodie
He wants attention like all the other obama haters. Why people give in to that attention I don’t know. It’s not like he’s the smartest fool in the world.
But what’s f’d up is that if this was said to bush. There’d be no twitter. His life would be fucked. But whose to say someone isn’t hooking his ass, his families ass up as we speak. Change that, what really f’d up is he just took blacks back alot and gave others ammo so he can get 15min of fame.
God bless America, that we can write things like that in a very public forum and not be put in jail for the rest of our lives, or killed outright by a secret death squad. Our country has its share of issues, but there are still a few things left that keep it great.
On topic, I am very disappointed in the health care bill. It was originally great, but once big concessions were made (no public option), it turned into being worse than no health care bill. It ended up with Obama needing to get it passed for his own reasons, and he gave up too much to achieve that political goal.
When the public option was dropped, the whole thing should have been scrapped. That’s my opinion.
lol @ good dude
I feel what the martin dude is saying i agree with him, he shouldn’t be punished its free speech but he’s lucky america as freedom to not abolish people like that cuz back then blacks never had the rights but now with social media and freedom its ok but he shouldn’t be harsh to killing a men like that. Obama doesn’t understand the ins to settling matters. My dad is a politician/activist and he’s been fighting to change america with his knowledge around the jurisdiction. Telling obama to bring home the troops” and to learn from him because obama is delaying his year as a president and his manefesto.
He said he wanted him dead! And I full agree with him! Not that he was going to do it! Big difference! His free speech was violated by that muslim bastard in the white house!
@ ertertert: You have accomplished a rarity on this site by posting a grievously ignorant comment. I don’t deal with them on here very often, but every once in a while someone comes along and has something deplorable to say.
Why is it that Obama, who has proclaimed that he is of the Christian faith, must constantly be referred to as a Muslim by the likes of you? People like you tend to say this as if it is a NEGATIVE thing to be a Muslim, which is certainly UNTRUE and offensive to the Muslim faith. Secondly, George Bush also claimed Christianity and no one seems to question his faith.
Let it be known that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a Palestinian city. He grew up in Nazareth, where his parents were from, which is located in Israel. Jesus, then, is a Jew of Israeli descent. Therefore, to suggest that someone of darker skin with a foreign name is somehow not a Christian is ludicrous.
If you’re looking for a blond-haired, blue-eyed Jesus, you will be in for a rude awakening.
You should also realize that there are limits to freedom of speech. Those limits are placed on THREATS, fighting words, and incitement of riots.
In short, there is no place in America for the sentiments expressed in Mr. Martin’s words nor for your horrendously hateful and religiously insensitive comments.
Furthermore, if you really meant it, you’d say things like this when other people are around you to hear it and respond, COWARD.
As far as health care reform goes, I think we may have failed him instead of him failing us. We allowed the public option to lose momentum in the public eye because we weren’t willing to stand up for it, talk it up, call, e-mail, or write our representative politicians and tell them that we would not go without the public option.
Instead, we allowed those on the political right to scare us by misrepresenting the facts and intentions behind those proposals and failed to respond to those misrepresentations. Thus, no public option to help drive down the prices of health care.
Going forward, I would say that any and all who believe in President Obama’s proposed CHANGE should understand that we are in a FIGHT: those who are protected, uplifted, and at an advantage due to the status quo versus those who are dissatisfied and at a disadvantage because of it.
They are going to fight to maintain their undue advantage in this society and it is up to us to fight just as hard to change things and level the playing field for all Americans. They’re doing what they are supposed to do, increasing intensity . We have to decide what to do about it.
Hell on punishment …I think liberals gave one of two book authors an artistic award for writing a book about assassinating Bush.Same went for Moores movie about Bush.
Maybe the liberals should reward his artistic tweet as well.If not maybe he should write a book on how to assassinate the president with
movie rights like they did with Bush.
Maybe he publish a Hip Hop tune or Album about Obama sounds like
Hip Hop style words down already.
