Are Nicki Minaj & Drake The New King & Queen?
Lil Wayne‘s protégés, Nicki Minaj and Drake, are covering the May 2010 issue of XXL and are being dubbed “the new King & Queen of Hip-Hop”. Are these titles fitting for the two heavily buzzed about newbies? Do they undeniably have next, or does the game (and them!) need more time to truly crown them? Check out what XXL had to say about the Young Money bread winners:
Lil Wayne might be gone ’til November, but Young Money is still in the house. Nicki Minaj and Drake take center stage next month as Weezy’s protégés grace the cover of the May 2010 issue of XXL. Both have built a deafening buzz throughout the past year and change, with standout verses and chart topping singles under their respective belts. With fans clamoring for their highly anticipated debut albums, Drake and Nicki stand on the cusp of being crowned hip-hop’s new reigning king and queen.
“Making sure the Young Money ship is never sinkin’” – Drake
What do you guys think? Is it too soon to call it, or is it a “might as well, we know they’re up next” kind of situation? Also, you can check out the rest of the article here.

Maybe Drake, but Nikki? I don’t see the hype at all.
If she had real skills, she wouldn’t need to inflate her ass for attention.
I’m just sayin’.
I think people really need to give nicki credit. She is doing her thing. And represents herself accordingly when needed. Look at her interview on monique’s show. I don’t expect her skills to be real solid at this stage of the game. But she is getting better, and she is doing her thing. People need to stop hating and actually start supporting.
Drake is cool and can possibly hold a crown at this point where hiphop is at. We’ll see how it goes when lil wayne is in the glasshouse. I really want to see yung money do damage in 2010.
I haven’t seen Nicki on Monique’s show. I’m a bit skeptical it will actually be intellectual. But I’m sure a quick google wouldn’t hurt.
It’s not really hating, it’s more of having an actual opinion. Instead of following the masses, I like to look at something from my own personal view without outside influences. If a person’s opinion doesn’t follow mainstream it’s “hating”. I think I will hate on then…
On Usher’s “Lil Freak” she raps the name of all of Santa’s reindeer. On Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad”, she lists two horror movies and then says she’s the villian in both. Back to back. That’s kind of enough said right there…
Oh, and also, the whole conformity to hiphop’s idea of what makes a woman sexy is not attractive. True talent, ala Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill didn’t have to do anything to conform to the hip hop ho look because they had the skills to make up their actual talent.
If she didn’t try so hard to portray a cartoonish image and get injections in her rear end, I’d probably take her more seriously. Add that to the fact that she’s attractive anyway without the need for the implants/injections makes me really sad that she felt she had to get them.
But I guess that’s truly the fault of the rap industry…
I agree with Drake but when It comes to Nicki, there is a lack of female hip hop artist and Nicki is the only one who stands out with her style and music. The people who do not agree with Nicki being the Queen of hip hop, I would like to hear who should be on this cover?
They definitely have all the hype, that’s for sure.
I agree with Frost.
I farted
I agree frost. But to touch on what you said. I’m not really judging her on that. Let’s be real, there shouldn’t be a need for role models if parents would just raise their kids right.
Plus people are going to get what they want out of something regardless. Their going to be slutty, ignorant, annoying no matter who is getting face time. People are going to look for excuses to put something on, because their not bold enough to take responsibility for doing it. Or they see others, like their parents other adults pointing fingers.
Truthfully as long as she puts on a show tracks etc, I really don’t have a problem with her. That’s what she’s getting paid to do, not raise peoples kids. We all know how the game in the industry goes. It’s obviously not going to change anytime soon, so people should school their kids on the bs of it and how not to be drawn by it.
I agree with Frost. I’m not hatin’ just my my opinion. I heard so much hype about niki long before i ever heard her. I guess my expectations were too high because shes okay, but i’m not overly impressed. I mean, i roll my eyes everytime i hear the reindeer thing. So if that title is determined by hype, she wins uncontested, but if its determined by talent, she has a long way to go before she unseats her predecesors. As for Drake hes alright. I like his music but nothing I’ve heard compells me to scrap up for the $9.99 to buy his album. Haven’t even downloaded anything from him. I still play it on the radio though.
I love nicki, I was banging nicki before she even hit mainstream, I’m a female artist too and i think minaj is having fun playing dress up and being sexy, and also her flows gotta go with her look she’s a barbie right and who(kids/teenagers) wants to hear a barbie rapping about real shit(guns, poverty, fighting, and etc when she’s in her barbie mode.) 4real sometimes she real rapping and then sometimes she’s fun rapping either way it go i love her versatility…..she’s a brander lil girls loving her right now the only thing is i hope she have longevity in the rap game because if she do she’s opening the door for some new female rappers…oh yeah and just because someone have a negative opinion about her I wouldn’t go as far as calling it hating, it’s just their opinion. If somebody love eating shyt and u say yuk thats nasty so U mean to tell me they hating on eating shyt..nooooo they jus think its nasty that’s all. Everybody have the right to their opinion why not express it, but like i said I’m a huge nicki fan and i like her openess about being bi-sexual, cuz i love women
stop hating ppl for real, i like nicki cuz shes exciting new and super unique, underground there are so many real rappers who aint making it and dats cause real hiphop dont sell nomore ppl want to be entertained. hiphop aint dead its changing. to me it really dosent matter whu da better lyricists if you cant sell or get followers? people hating here fail to see the bigger picture, shes more than just a gimmick or a sexy ass body i must add she may just be the future of industury not just hiphop, so cheer up and move with tha times.
plus i fink her music was sick wen she first came ou massive attack was just one track im sure she got so much better up her sleeve.
i love her and she inspires me to strive and succeed so she is a role model.!
peace
