DrJays.com Exclusive: Karina Pasian x Akademiks
Def Jam‘s Karina Pasian began making her mark as a gifted singer back in 2003 when, as a child, she landed a spot on Star Search, and wowed viewers with a performance that won her the first round of competition.
Now 18, her resume has grown to include work with an array of songwriters, producers and artists, including The-Dream, Tricky Stewart, Gordon Chambers, Chris Brown, Carlos McKinnney, Lil Mama and more.
“I’ve recorded over 70 songs in the last two years,” Karina says. “It was a period of real growth for me as I learned to focus and stay consistent.”
The New York City native has been playing the piano since she was three-years-old, and her influences include everyone from classic jazz legends to Brandy.
Karina performed the standard “Misty” when she was at the White House last year. “Emilio Estefan, who has been a friend of my family for years, helped to put the show together, and invited me to be a part of it,” she says. “Later, my brother told me that I was the first Dominican to play at the White House, and that made me very proud.”
Karina’s most popular song to date, “Sixteen,” was written and produced by The-Dream and Tricky Stewart. “I wanted to do a song about what teenager girls go through in urban areas. It’s not cool that boys think they’re being cute when they say nasty stuff to us on the street.”
I got a chance to catch up with the soft-spoken songstress at Akademiks‘s NYC showroom, where she modeled fresh looks for spring/summer 2010. Check out the shots below, including a style Q&A with Miss Pasian:
Kiki: What are some of your favorite brands right now?
Karina: “Marc Jacobs, Topshop, Steve Madden, Zara—and of course Akademiks!”
Kiki: Who are your style icons?
Karina: “Cassie and Rihanna. I would wear everything I’ve seen them in.”
Kiki: What is one trend we would never catch you rocking?
Karina: A super Gothic look.
Kiki: One look you can’t resist on a man?
Karina: Skinny jeans. Not too skinny, but fitted right. Slimmer jeans can make guys look taller!
Kiki: Can you give the ladies out there a few tips to look right for spring?
Karina: Rock florals this spring, cute summer dresses and side braids. Wedge shoes are a must!
