Old vs New: Rod Laver adidas

Rod Laver was a nifty tennis pro (he won a pair of Grand Slams), but most sneakerheads are just checking for the comfort and classic look of his signature shoe.

While all the new age varieties are cool—the DQM designed, “Rod Laver vintage” models (see below) sport streamlined mesh and leather uppers—they do look a tad bit like spruced up Stan Smith adidas.

However, before sneaker reissues were the norm, the OG nylon mesh upper Rod Laver (above) with the gray fabric toe cap was the shoe of choice for discerning sneaker fiends, who weren’t stuck in a Nike-everything mode. These are still readily available in green & white and blue & white colorways. Also, at $65, they are 10 bucks cheaper than the newer adidas Consortium-designed versions.

So which do you think is better? The Rod Laver vintage or the classic Rod Laver?
