Hit Or Miss: Nicki Minaj’s “I Am Barbie”
Nicki Minaj‘s first TV special, I Am Barbie, aired over the weekend on BET and if you watch closely, the star reveals some real gems.
Perhaps the most telling moment of the show comes at the start, when Cash Money founder Bryan “Baby” Williams (a stand-in for the currently incarcerated Lil Wayne) asks Nicki what the vibe of her anticipated debut album will be.
“You know what’s so crazy?” Nicki replies slowly. “I know what people WANT to hear from me, but that’s not always what comes natural. That’s not always what I really want to do. But I don’t want to lose them in the process.”
Discussing how hard it is to balance the street-oriented music of her past with her new pop-princess steez, Nicki touches on how she now realizes just how young her fan base is—ranging from age 12 and up. “It makes me feel guilty,” she says solemnly. “I know how I am with my 12-year-old brother. I’m very strict. So every now and then I gotta censor it, but if I censor it too much, I wouldn’t be Nicki Minaj, you know?”
Birdman’s advice to her? “Continue to do what you feel; don’t let it overload you, ’cause then it will weigh you down. Just feel free and be excited about it.”
Filmed during the cable network’s “Spring Bling” festivities, the BET cameras follow Nicki around as she prepares for her performances, completes her hectic promo schedule, interacts with her fans and finds rare downtime. The footage captures what is indeed a whirlwind period in Nicki’s career and it appears she’s handling it all with a mature attitude.
Nicki’s currently working on her official debut album, due for release this fall.
