Mixtape Alert: Theo Martins’s You Can’t Do That On Television
Rhode Island isn’t necessarily a hip-hop hotbed. Aside from rapper Sage Francis, few artists from this state make it past the local scene. If they do, they typically head for bigger and more promising pastures in spots like New York City or Los Angeles. But new acts like Theo Martins might change that soon.
Theo Martins, the Rhode Island native who released his Channel Surfin’ mixtape just last month, has just blessed the blogosphere with his latest street release, You Can’t Do That On Television.
Inspired by the Canadian sketch comedy show (and, later, Nickelodeon staple) of the same name, the seven-track project features fantastic production from Ohio’s $port, who blends old school sampling with futuristic sounds for a breezy, fun listen. Of course, it helps that Martins is a more than capable MC—he’s a mixture of Lupe Fiasco and Wale with a style all his own. And if you can catch him saying a curse word, we’ll pay you $100. But you probably won’t even realize their missing because each rhyme is so potent and powerful. Don’t believe us? check for yourself.
We thought so. Tracklist and download link below. And if you love what you hear, which I know you will, then check in with Rhode Island’s hero on his personal site, I’m Just Theo, and on Twitter (@TheoMartins) and let him know that you’re bumpin’ his latest tape which you picked up at DrJays.com Live.
