Boogs’s Netflix Picks: Anime

This week we’ll drive into the anime world with some of my favorite anime franchises. Who wants to live in the real world any way?

Cowboy Bebop

Based on the animated television series, Cowboy Bebop is set on Mars in the year 2071 and tells the story of a spaceship captain, Spike Siegel (David Lucas), and his band of vigilantes. When one of them witnesses a deadly terrorist attack, they all set out to catch those responsible and, more importantly, cash in on the reward money. Picture wild west in space and don’t forget the big-breasted anime women.

Street Fighter II

Although most of the characters from the popular Street Fighter II video game make cameos in this animated film, four young favorites—tough-guy Ryu, rich-kid Ken, bad-boy Guile and boy-toy Chun Li—take center stage to bring down the evil Bison, who has plans to destroy the world. Plenty of fast-action fight sequences keep this movie plugging along. But while it’s animated, it’s not child’s play. One of the BEST VIDEO GAMES EVER MADE, this movie is the cherry on top. Although this animation is old (1994) it’s a thrill watching the storyline play out. We’ll talk about the animated series later.

Gorgeous animation and high adventure are the order of the day in this anime that finds boy captain Toshiro Hitsugaya accused of treason after he takes off in pursuit of thieves who’ve stolen the King’s seal artifact from the caravan transporting it. Wounded and on the run, Hitsugaya refuses to defend himself. Now, Hitsugaya’s friends are determined to find out why he’s behaving so oddly when the Soul Reapers are so obviously out for his head. Although this second installment is better than the first, I suggest getting familiar with the story first, and then checking this out.

Led by Integra Hellsing, the mysterious Hellsing organization works to protect mankind from supernatural threats, a mission the agency accomplishes by relying heavily on the abilities of its top operative, the renegade vampire Alucard. Throughout this anime series, the Hellsing fighters deal with attempts on the Queen’s life, rival agents from the Vatican and attacks by the dangerous Valentine brothers. I can’t talk enough about this. Visually this movie is amazing—please be aware of the extremes amount of blood you’ll see. Ha!

Dragon Ball Z

When a band of space pirates plant a seed from the Tree of Might on Earth, the seed roots and begins to grow, threatening to suck up all the planet’s energy and leave it a deserted wasteland. Goku and his friends try to destroy the tree, but the pirates—led by Turles—attack them, and Gohan is captured. OK, and now for the people that had no idea what I just said, this is one of the most interesting  franchises (storyline wise). Trust me you’ll enjoy it.
