Are You Ready For Machete?
If you’re a film buff like I am, you were giddy as hell when Quentin Tarentino and Robert Rodriguez collaborated on their ode to classic b-grade movies with Grindhouse, a double feature consisting of two feature-length segments by both directors. The best thing about the double feature were the trailers neatly tucked in between Planet Terror and Death Race. All of the trailers were pretty awesome, but the one that stuck out for many (aside from the absolutely absurd trailer for the faux film Thanksgiving) was the feature entitled Machete, starring tough guy actor Danny Trejo.
The Machete trailer offered not much more than what appeared to be a Mexican guy named Machete (Trejo) doing his best Shaft impersonation as a hired badass who went up against dope dealers and evildoers with—you guessed it—a machete as his weapon.
For those who dove deeper into the origins of the trailer, Robert Rodriguez revealed it was a script he wrote as far back as 1993 with Trejo in mind. The trailer was utterly ridiculous (and downright incredible) as Trejo hacked, slashed, cursed and loved his way through the brief preview. Fans begged for more, and now Rodriguez is delivering a full-length feature film.
Earlier this month Rodriguez responded to Arizona’s controversial new immigration laws by releasing an “illegal” trailer for the feature film which implied the film would be about Machete leading a revolt against anti-immigration politicians. We’re still not sure if this is exactly what the film is about, but it makes for one hell of a great teaser. The actual film hits theaters September 3, 2010.
