What Is This Mortal Kombat Video About?
If you were a youngster in the 90s and you had any video game savvy, the power move was to hit the local arcade and shell quarters out on rounds of Mortal Kombat. Even if you were worthless with the joystick you still did it because the video game was so popular; you’d feel like a nobody if you weren’t acquainted with Raiden, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Johnny Cage…I could go on. And before any Street Fighter fanboys/fangirls attack the comment section about which game was superior, let’s just get it straight now: regardless of which game was better, Mortal Kombat caused more controversy due to its gory content. Remember those fatalities? You’re probably wincing just remembering the things Scorpion and Sub-Zero did to their enemies after the video game announcer yelled “FINISH HIM!”
Mortal Kombat invaded households across the globe, shipping millions of units in cartridge form. Everybody was happy. Well, except for parents. And the Entertainment Software Rating Board [ESRB], which was actually created in part because the game was so bloody that moms and dads everywhere poured out complaints until the video game big wigs listened. Then in 1995, director Paul W. S. Anderson decided to take the wildly successful franchise and flip it into a motion picture, which, whether you liked it or not, is considered one of the best video game to movie adaptations ever. It also raked in over $122 million at the box office, which, 15 years ago, wasn’t too shabby at all.
Eight games, two movies, a TV series and countless action figures later, the once successful franchise is dormant like Snorlax during your typical game of Pokemon (all my Pokemon heads, you understand what I’m talking about.) Until yesterday, when an incredible seven-minute trailer of sorts dropped on the interwebs. We were lucky enough to be one of the first viewers and in all honesty, after you see this, you’ll wonder if it’s a preview for a movie or a new-age trailer for a video game. Just watch, you’ll see what we mean.
