EA Sports Debuts An MMA Game At The E3 Expo

On October 19, two legends of mixed martial arts will finally meet in a clash of epic proportions. Fedor Emelianenko and Randy Couture will meet to see who is the best in a match up that has long been considered a dream fight for MMA aficionados.

Well, not really.

At the E3 Expo in Los Angeles, EA Sports gave attendees a deeper look into one of the most highly anticipated sports titles of the year: EA MMA. With THQ‘s UFC Undisputed as the lone representative in the mixed martial arts world, EA has decided to throw their hat into the ring as they gather fighters from organizations such as DREAM and Strikeforce as well as some of the most popular venues around the world to give the UFC a run for their money.

Quite honestly, after spending some time with an early build of the game, I can say the game is much more fluid than its rival and has a very distinct approach that will make it very popular with MMA fans. Everything is easy to manage and won’t wreck your thumbs with button mashing on your controller with Undisputed’s “love it or hate it” Shine technique. There are many things—such as the always hard-to-figure-out ground game—that EA has managed to bring into the game as more fun than chore. You can thank that aspect to some of the MMA fighters who have been consultants, such as Frank Trigg, as they wanted the game to be about the mental battle in the ring rather than a button-smashing contest.

Getting my time with the game, I chose Fedor against Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem when a recognizable voice hopped on the controller next to me and began talking trash. I happened to look to my right and saw this guy…

For those that don’t know, the man who kicked my a*s at EA MMA was none other than legendary fighter-turned-Strikeforce-commentator Frank Shamrock. I won’t get into the details regarding how bad Shamrock kicked my butt, but it certainly was an honor to get a beatdown from an MMA legend.

EA MMA drops this October for PS3 and Xbox 360. For more information, go to EA MMA’s official site. Check out the new trailer below.
