Can Spider-Man Bounce Back?
The picture above is of little-known yet accomplished actor, Andrew Garfield. Set to be the new Peter Parker in a Spider-Man “reboot” film, Garfield has a pair of sizable shoes to fill along with the rest of an all-new cast set to take over the film.
Originally planned as a sequel (i.e. Spider-Man 4), the film reset occurred because the director of the first three films, Sam Raimi, announced he would not be able to make a film up to the standards of the franchise in time for a 2011 release date.
Instead of pushing the release date back (which certainly seems as if it would have been the more logical decision), Sony Pictures chose another director and announced a total reinvention of the film at the beginning of the year. Of course, the film will now be released in 2012, a release date which possibly could have been enough time to give fans a more conventional sequel.
The new director, Marc Webb, thinks fans will be pleased with the film, and particularly pleased with Garfield’s performance.
“Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents,” Marc said. “He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”
Garfield’s film credits include Lions for Lambs and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, among others.
Other cast members include Jamie Bell, Josh Hutcherson, Frank Dillane, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Logan Lerman, and Alden Ehrenreich. In addition to this new cast, it is also widely speculated the film will feature a significantly different tone, akin to the gritty feel of the Batman films, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
The first three Spider-Man films grossed about $2.5 billion in box offices worldwide. While the 2012 film should be quite interesting, is it ever the right move to fix what ain’t broke?
The next Spider-Man film, which so far remains nameless, is scheduled for a 3-D release on July 3, 2012.
