Mary J. Blige Not Attending Howard University
Despite online reports of the past few days, Mary J. Blige will not be attending Howard University. A spokesperson for the singer told Us Magazine:
“Howard University came to her and expressed interest in having her as a student, but she will not be attending.”
Apparently, the confusion stemmed from a recent performance by Blige on “Good Morning America,” during which she told the crowd:
“As you know I never got a chance to finish high school but they gave me my honorary degree the other day….and I’ve been accepted into Howard University, the class of 2014!”
In a statement to the Washington Post, a representative for the highly celebrated HBCU dismissed reports that the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul would be among the incoming class, but left the door open for the possibility of a Blige matriculation:
“We encourage Ms. Blige to continue her studies and welcome her consideration of Howard University in the future. We are happy to work with Ms. Blige on completing the formal process for admission.”
In response, Blige took to her Twitter page to defend her announcement on “GMA”:
Although I was completely unaware you could get into an institution of higher learning as respected as Howard University with a GED, I commend Mary for taking completing her education so seriously—money is no excuse to rest on your laurels when a part of your life as essential as education is lacking.

I thought it sounded funny that she got accept to Howard after just getting a GED. I figured they might have accepted her as a mature student, apparently not.
Very proud of Mary J. Blige for valuing education!!
I went to one of the world’s top prep schools and went to college with people from a totally different background who obtained their GED. 5% of all college students are able to do so because they obtained a GED. It is respectable way to break glass ceilings caused by socioeconomic imbalances (immigrants, personal problems, poverty). Having a diverse student body enriches the classroom experience for all of us.
