Every year when David Stern steps up to the podium at the NBA Draft to announce the draft pick of the Los Angeles Clippers, sports writers get ready to warn the unlucky player drafted by the Clips that they’re about to fall victim to the “Clipper Curse,” a team that’s had an extraordinary run of injuries and poor performances from their players.

Al-Faroug Aminu does not look impressed after being drafted by the Clippers last month

However, after the tragic death of ex-Clipper Lorenzen Wright and looking back at their history from the mid-1990s, one could come to the conclusion that the Clipper Curse is very real. Here’s a look at the tragic stories which involved almost HALF THEIR ROSTER from 1996.

Lorenzen Wright: Recently killed, his wife may or may not have been involved.

Malik Sealy: Killed in May 2000 at the age of 30 in a car accident while driving home from Kevin Garnett’s birthday party. Side note 1: The guy who was driving the other car, Souksangouane Phengsene, was intoxicated at the time and was jailed for four years for killing Sealy. When released from prison, he was convicted again of drunk driving and jailed for another eight years. Side note 2: Sealy wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time. Side note 3: Malik was named after Malik Shabazz a.k.a. Malcolm X).

Brian Williams (later changed his name to Bison Dele): Missing, presumed killed by his own brother who then stole his identity. We’re not making this up.

Kevin Duckworth: Died in 2008 at age 44 from a heart attack (brought on primarily through Duck being a very big boy).

Rodney Rogers: Paralysed from the shoulders down after a dirt-bike accident in 2008.

As tragic as injuries are to promising young players like Blake Griffin (pictured above), who injured his kneecap soon after being drafted last year and didn’t play one game for the Clippers in what would have been his rookie season, and Shaun Livingston (below) who tore every ligament in his knee joint in 2007, compared to what happened to the LA Clippers Class of ’96, maybe Griffin and Livingston should be counting their blessings.
