R&B Star Tank Talks “Sex Music” Over Dinner
Tank has long been known as a hitmaker within music-industry circles, crafting classics for acts like Missy Elliott (“One Minute Man”) and hits for Chris Brown, Jamie Foxx and more. He’s enjoyed a reasonable amount of solo success over the years (2001′s “Maybe I Deserve,” 2007′s “Please Don’t Go”) and now he’s gearing up for star status with the aptly titled upcoming album, Now Or Never.
“My goal with this album is to let the world know it’s now or never,” the artist (born Durell Babbs) told a select group of media at a dinner last night in midtown Manhattan. “Now is the time for me to make the most of all the hard work I’ve put in up to this point.”
Over shrimp dumplings, spicy calamari and cocktails, Tank quickly won over a skeptical crew of journalists and bloggers. His warm demeanor and bright personality shined in the intimate setting. And when asked why fans haven’t been given more than a glimpse of his charming ways over the years, his answer was simple and earnest. “Timing is everything,” he said with a shoulder shrug. “I won’t point the finger at anyone, but things weren’t happening how they should. Now is really the time.”

As you can see, “Sex Music” was on the menu
Entertaining everyone with a range of colorful stories, including how he was the “only black kid” who represented his school in Spanish and Math competitions and how he once took sleeping pills on a flight to Australia and knocked out for 12 hours straight (he’s still searching for those pills to this day), Tank also took a moment to reveal the thing he’s most proud of himself for—his lack of ego. “I have no ego whatsoever,” he said. “I sang background on tour with Jamie Foxx—as Tank. I love what I do, and creating music is all I care about.”
About to embark on a promotional tour that will take him to 46 cities in 30 days (“I’m not playin’,” he says) Tank recently debuted the video for “Sex Music” on VIBE.com.
