This Saturday, UFC 117 will take place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA. Headlining the pay-per-view card will be the highly anticipated bout between Anderson “The Spider” Silva vs. Chael Sonnen. With a bevy of other interesting fights on the card, allow us to give you some insight on who will win and why come Saturday night.
Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen
Chael Sonnen has been doing his best to promote this fight. He has called Silva every single bad name you can think of and has built some hype around the bout. He even has people thinking he has a shot against the best fighter in the world. It’s too bad he is drawing all of these eyeballs to watch him get annihilated by “The Spider.”
An incensed Silva is one you want no parts of. Silva hasn’t been stopped since Ryo Chonan‘s “rabbit out the hat” flying-scissor-heel hook back in 2004. Since then, Silva has been simply destroying any opponent willing to engage. Therein lies Sonnen’s problem—he is more than willing to engage (or so he says now). The Brazilian is a natural counter-puncher who is blessed with both tremendous reflexes and knockout power. Sonnen is blessed with the gift of gab, a solid wrestling background and a big heart. None of which will help once the bell rings. Silva will look to make an example out of Sonnen like he did Forrest Griffin after his snooze-induced outing against Thales Leites which had people questioning his desire to fight. With this fight coming after Silva’s head-scratching victory over Demian Maia, it’s a solid bet to say that Silva will be out to massacre Sonnen in the worst possible way. Sonnen’s only chance is to use his wrestling pedigree to take Silva down and grind him out for 25 minutes. But even then, Silva is no bum off of his back and will use his long limbs to make the ground game devoid of any fun for Sonnen. But standing up and trading blows with Silva is like fighting a giant buzz saw with a slingshot—he has absolutely zero chance. Silva will let this fight go for as long as he feels. If he wants to demolish Sonnen in 40 seconds, best believe he will do it. If he wants to embarrass Sonnen for two rounds, he’ll do that, too. Chances are, he’ll beat the brakes off of Sonnen before getting him out of there late in the first round or early in the second frame.
Prediction: Silva def. Sonnen via 1st or 2nd round TKO (by any way he wants)
