Live @ Suite 19 Performance: Joya Bravo
I tried to skip this week’s Live @ Suite 19 performance. I had a crap load of work to do and not enough time in my day. So I hid in my corner of the office hoping the show would go on and someone else would deal with an artist who’s name I didn’t know. I mean, who’s Joya Bravo?
Joya Bravo is the singer/violinist/rapper whose first notes for Live @ Suite 19 bitch slapped me back into reality.
Born in Queens, New York and raised in Atlanta, Joya ‘s voice is the soothing salve in a world of painfully mundane pre-fab pop stars with electronically altered voices. She’s a lethal, enviable combination of sass and talent. Quite frankly, Joya’s the chick all those other girls should want to be. Her remake of Lil Wayne‘s “A Milli” is both stunning and adorable, dance-inducing and fierce. She plays the violin with the relaxed proficiency of a classically trained musician (which she is). Joya brings fresh energy to “Super Star,” her remake of the Ting Tings‘ “That’s Not My Name.”
Thanks for waking me up, Miss Bravo, and showing me who’s boss. I’m now smart enough to have your music on repeat.
